Mavis Beacon Typing 17 Deluxe

I find it difficult to believe that a program that has been around so long and gone through so many editions would not be Vista compatible after Vista has been around for so long. Like it or not, it is nearly impossible to buy a new machine that doesn't come with some version of Vista installed.

Had considerable trouble loading program on more than one computer. Finally gave up on one!

Installed on Vista x32. Appears to work. I bought it as a gift; the recipent hasn't complained. BUT HERE'S THE PROBLEM. Conservatively, about 40% of the companies that offer rebates are going to try to scam you out of it. This is not hyperbole. I bought the product 7 weeks ago. Today, when I went to Encore's site I was told "Invalid Purchase Date." Yea right. This is typical. The scammers either lose your mail or trump-up some bogus excuse. Fortunately, I've got the doc. I WILL GET MY REBATE--BELIEVE THAT. And I will see that Encore loses business. Don't they realize how small a world the Internet has created? The word spreads like wildfire. Let it spread.

As an adult, this is a very easy way to learn to type. I love it.

This is the software I credit with at first teaching me to type(version 2 I believe), and then improving my typing speed. I couldn't even begin to estimate how much time i have saved by using this program. Don't be fooled and think that this is only for beginners, it can help even the best of typists to improve their typing speed and accuracy. I would highly recommend this program. As a matter of fact I use it every time i'm stuck on the phone listening to hold music...Thanks various "customer support" lines for improving my typing skills.

I bought this program to help me increase my typing speed and I have to say that I am very impressed with the program. It is very easy to use and is a great tool for a beginner typist as well as an expert.

This is good typing software. But it is old, it does not support windows vista.

This is written from the comments of 9- and 12-year-old girls. The older of the two "hates typing", but... They both took to the program very well and enjoy the way the learning is built into fun exercises. The "typing hater" said, "There are a lot of fun games." They both expressed the wish that "Mavis" let them practice the 2-4 letters they had just learned a bit more, before moving them on to the next set of new ones. They seem to be learning typing very well. Value was max of "5" due to generous rebate [assuming it comes through!]

Mavis Beacon is an acknowledged leader in the typing tutorial field, and once again provides a nice system to improve/perfect your typing skills. It is easy to use, has a pleasant interface, and is effective. It allows multiple profiles so more than one person can use the program on the same computer, allowing you to track the progress of your kids as they move through the levels. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to learn to type (or simply improve their skills). Program is especially valuable when there are rebates available as the final cost can be as little as $10.

I've bought 40+ items from this site and never had any problem what so ever. Always great price, prompt shipping and product arrives on time in the condition it advertised.

I used to own Version 8 of this software. It does its job – it helps to improve typing speed. And it still works. What I did not like is the small window that you will not be able to resize. It is always 640x480. I understand that it was originally designed for the old VGA monitors. I purchased version 17 deluxe with hope that this problem has been addressed and fixed. Now it is 21st century and everybody have monitors with resolution at least 1024x768. I own a LCD monitor with resolution 1280x1024, same as most other LCD monitors. I was disappointed to find out that Mavis still think that very small fixed application window is normal and it does not bother users. I tried it; my eyes were tired after 10 minutes. Basically, it is the same old Version 8 software with addition of several new games and images. It has an installer now. However, a very small, non-resizable application window makes it very difficult to use this application during the typing exercises. If it did not come with rebate that covers almost the full cost, I would return it.
