Formed in 1973, Los Lobos Del Este De Los Angeles have never been "jus another band for East L.A.". The much-celebrated group features David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lazano, Louie Perez and Steve Berlin, each of whom plays at least half a dozen electric and acoustic instruments. Los Lobos's rich blend of hard rock, R&B folk, country, Tex-Mex, and traditional Latin sounds, multicultural themes, and bilingual themes was, and remains revolutionary. From the rare early tracks that open disc 1 all the way to the brand new, unreleased Los Super Seven cut that closes disc 4, this album takes you on the group's remarkable musical journey. Other collaborators and guest musicians inlcude T-Bone Burnett, Alex Acuna, Ry Cooder, Jorge Calderon, Jim Keltner, Mitchell Froom, John Hiatt, Levon Helm, Victor Bisetti, Joe Ely, Freddy Fender, and many more. This 84 track compilation is from all nine band albums, plus live tracks and cuts from movie soundtracks, tribute and promo albums spanning from 1977 to 2001.

When Los Lobos arrived on the late 1970s Los Angeles punk scene, they seemed out of step with almost every trend imaginable. Dressed like a bunch of middle aged dads at a PTA meeting, they played an utterly unique mixture of 1950s-style rock & roll, country, R&B, and traditional Mexican music, all filtered through the gritty lens of their urban upbringing. Time has proven they were on the right track; EL CANCIONERO MAS Y MAS attempts to cover the group's three decades-plus career in a four disc box set, collecting not only Los Lobos' best work as a band, but significant tracks from the members' many side projects, as well as rarities and B-sides. Los Lobos have always played a dizzying array of disparate styles with equally effortless panache, and this set does a great job revealing why they maintain one of the most loyal fan bases in popular music.
A multi-disc, authoritative box set usually arrives toward the end of an artist's career, which is what made the appearance of Los Lobos' four-disc retrospective El Cancionero: Mas y Mas in 2000 a little surprising. They weren't selling as many records, nor were they quite as hip as they were ten years earlier, yet they retained a devoted cult and critical following -- they were still in the prime of their career, not ready to be enshrined. Fortunately, the band and Rhino went ahead and assembled a box, which winds up capturing a band at the height of its powers. The set smartly spends a lot of time on side projects, including the Latin Playboys, Los Super Seven, Houndog, and selections from Cesar Rosas' solo album, plus a healthy number of live songs, B-sides, tribute album tracks, and 11 previously unreleased tracks. These tracks deepen the already rich musical tapestry Los Lobos weaves, and the end result is pretty impressive. As the set winds from the authentic Mexican folk music of 1977 through the gutsy roots rock of 1987 and the dreamy soundscapes of 1992 to the daring music of the mid-'90s and then the consolidation of their strengths on 1999's This Time, it's hard not to be astonished not just by the band's range, but the fact that they do it all really well. This is the definitive portrait of Los Lobos, highlighting everything that they can do and containing almost all of their greatest songs; this is one of the rare times that a four-disc box set summarizes all of an artist's strengths, while telling a great musical story, as well. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
