Find out why this "wild and crazy guy" has had America laughing in film after fantastically funny film! The Jerk: In this rags-to-riches-to-rags tale, sweetly na've Navin R. Johnson (Martin) decides to explore the world and finds he has a very "special purpose" along the way! Editor's Note
THE JERK: Navin Johnson, a none-too-bright white boy raised by a family of black sharecroppers, somehow manages to reach adulthood without ever discovering he was adopted. His parents finally tell him the truth on his birthday and, shocked by the news, he decides to head off to the big city to seek his fortune. Although he embarks on his odyssey with Candide-like optimism, Navin soon learns the cruel ways of the world as his crazy invention--a device to stop one's glasses from sliding--leads him from rags to riches and back to rags. Steve Martin is riotous in this no-holds-barred broad slapstick comedy, with Bernadette Peters playing his accepting love interest. Jackie Mason, M. Emmet Walsh, and Bill Macy are excellent in small roles, but the focus is always on Martin, who is at his goofy best in a film loaded with hysterical sight gags and a dog whose name cannot be said on television. DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID: Martin plays the role of Rigby Reardon, an inept private eye who comes to the aid of a wealthy and beautiful heiress. The film is cleverly interspliced with clips from classic detective films of the past. THE LONELY GUY: A struggling greeting card writer living in New York is forced to leave his girlfriend after he finds her in bed with another man. In an attempt to alleviate his despair, he writes a book about being a "lonely guy," making him an overnight sex symbol.

| | Professional Reviews | Variety 9 of 10 [Dead] Lensed in black-and-white and outfitted with a 'straight' mystery score by Miklos Rozsa and authentic 1940s costumes by Edith Head, this spoof of film noir detective yarns sees Steve Martin interacting with 18 Hollywood greats by way of intercutting of clips from some 17 old pictures...Film is most engaging in its romantic sparring between Martin and his gorgeous client, Ward...Sporting dark hair and facetious confidence, Martin also looks spiffy in trenchcoat and hat. Only other roles off note see Carl Reiner essentially essaying Otto Preminger as a Nazi, and Reni Santoni as a zealous Peruvian offficer. At-A-Glance Film Reviews 8 of 10 [Lonely] At times, the Steven Martin comedy The Lonely Guy resembles the kind of wacky gags found in the Zucker/Abrahams comedies such as Airplane!. But most of the time, the humor is played a little more straight than that. The running theme is that "Lonely Guy" is a universally recognized label for men without a special someone in their lives, and apparently no family either...The Lonely Guy is sidesplitting with a light touch of bittersweet, chronicling Steve Martin's efforts to cope with his Lonely Guy status. It builds solidly until taking a bizarre turn around the hour mark, goes downhill a bit, and drags on too long. But when all is said and done, it's quite satisfying. FilmCritic.com 8 of 10 [Jerk] One of Steve Martin's proto-characters, The Jerk isn't quite what his name suggests, he's really more of an idiot than a jerk. "Born a poor black man," the film follows his misadventures from the sharecrop farm to the big city, the circus, Hollywood, and ultimately fabulous wealth and bankruptcy, oblivious all the way. Ultimately he really does turn from sheer ignorant to wilfully awful, so maybe he's a jerk too... but that's beside the point. Martin's one-liners are pretty funny, very dry, and awfully quotable. Bernadette Peters, as the love of his life, appears in one of her most memorable roles, too. - Christopher Null
