From the Publisher:
John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same.

Marley quickly grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever, a dog like no other. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women's undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewelry. Obedience school did no good - Marley was expelled. Neither did the tranquilizers the veterinarian prescribed for him with the admonishment, "Don't hesitate to use these."

And yet Marley's heart was pure. Just as he joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley shared the couple's joy at their first pregnancy, and their heartbreak over the miscarriage. He was there when babies finally arrived and when the screams of a seventeen-year-old stabbing victim pierced the night. Marley shut down a public beach and managed to land a role in a feature-length movie, always winning hearts as he made a mess of things. Through it all, he remained steadfast, a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms.

Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a bigger-than-life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans.

About the Author:
John Grogan is the Pennsylvania columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer and the former editor in chief of Rodale's Organic Gardening magazine. Previously he worked as a reporter, bureau chief, and columnist at newspapers in Michigan and Florida. His work has won numerous awards, including the National Press Club's Consumer Journalism Award. He lives on a wooded hillside in Pennsylvania with his wife, Jenny, and their three children.

Annotation:
Marley is a hyperactive, intractable, mischievous, and entirely lovable yellow Lab, acquired by John Grogan and his wife because they thought having a dog would prepare them for parenthood. Not only did Marley take over their lives, but when children did eventually come along, Marley retained his place as firstborn and supremely difficult child. Grogan's very amusing chronicle of Marley's life and adventures is a first-rate memoir of a memorable pet.

Chapter One

And Puppy Makes Three

We were young. We were in love. We were rollicking in those sublime early days of marriage when life seems about as good as life can get. We could not leave well enough alone. And so on a January evening in 1991, my wife of fifteen months and I ate a quick dinner together and headed off to answer a classified ad in the Palm Beach Post.

Why we were doing this, I wasn't quite sure. A few weeks earlier I had awoken just after dawn to find the bed beside me empty. I got up and found Jenny sitting in her bathrobe at the glass table on the screened porch of our little bungalow, bent over the newspaper with a pen in her hand.

There was nothing unusual about the scene. Not only was the Palm Beach Post our local paper, it was also the source of half of our household income. We were a two-newspaper-career couple. Jenny worked as a feature writer in the Post's "Accent" se

5 of 5 This lab will make you appreciate your own! Wednesday, October 04, 2006
A Reader from DeLand, Florida

This is a fantastic book. My husband read it first and I watched him laugh and cry and couldn't wait to start reading it. We have two "bad" yellow labs but not as bad as Marley was! This book really makes me appreciate them even more. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone, but especially yellow lab owners.

5 of 5 A book all Retriever owners should own! Wednesday, August 23, 2006
Vinny from Long Island, NY
It's amazing how the author captures all the wrong-doings, and funny antics of a Labrador Retriever. Owning one, I can agree with all the feelings of happiness, and sadness that Lab ownership (or any dog for that matter) brings. I fell in Love with this book, and could not put it down. The author writes about his life with his wife, and kids and how the dog fits into that life. Very personal and very amusing! 5 of 5 Makes me want a dog! Even a "Bad" one! Tuesday, April 18, 2006
A Reader from Decatur, AL
I'm a cat person, but after reading this book I REALLY wanted to get a dog!! As a pet owner I was moved by Grogan's handling of the entire subject, especially the last chapters that deal with the decline and eventual death of Marley. I have an older pet, too, and reading that section was helpful in preparing for that inevitable day. Grogan is a skillful storyteller - I'm about to log on and find other books he's written. I'm hooked.

5 of 5 Life with the worlds most beloved dog. Thursday, March 02, 2006
Jenny at google from minnesota
After passing by this book at the book store 4 times, I finally decided that I would buy it to read on the airplane on our latest trip. I can't believe how much I got into the story! I was laughing out loud and crying on the plane. When a fellow passenger asked what I was reading and I told him, he kindly told me the ending of which I had not known. But anyway, I want to write John and tell him how much this book meant to me and we don't even own a dog! We have 2 cats but I still could feel his joy and sorrow.
