Fraser's definitive biography excites compassion and regard for all aspects of her subject, immersing the reader not only in the coming-of-age of a graceful woman, but also in the unraveling of an era. 60 illustrations.

Annotation:
This biography of Marie Antoinette describes her royal upbringing, her arranged marriage, the difficulties she had getting accepted, her indiscretions, and the political turmoil--which her behavior helped stir up--that led to her death by guillotine in 1793. A New York Times Notable Book for 2001.

Praise
Literary Review
"This is a fine biography, sympathetic without sentimentality, and with a keen awareness of the texture of its subject's world. Above all, it effectively jettisons the image of Marie Antoinette as the frivolous hedonist, the empty-headed soubrette." - John Adamson June 2001

New York Times Book Review
'[A] lavish, benevolent new rendering of the queen....Fraser's amply researched but occasionally turgid book is her first foray outside of British history...." - Francine Du Plessix Gray 09/23/2001

Washington Post Book World
"...Antonia Fraser's absorbing new biography reveals how much we did not know. Fraser, an accomplished biographer of such earlier English luminaries as Mary Queen of Scots and Oliver Cromwell, has produced a book to be savored, beautifully written and thoroughly researched. Above all, she provides a well-rounded picture with sensitive and fresh insights into the life and times of this unhappy queen." - Selwa Roosevelt 10/07/2001

Los Angeles Times Book Review
"The Marie Antoinette who emerges from these pages is fully formed, a feat for which Fraser deserves much praise. That we find so much sympathy for a character who has so little in common with the travails of our own time is to Fraser's credit too. She navigates the doublespeak and scurrilous journalism of the period with the skill of a master helmsman. Fraser researched at the Archives Nationales in Paris and the Hapsburg Archives in Vienna and found a remarkable number of eyewitness accounts of the queen's life--from her daughter, Madame Royale, to people on the street. She synthesizes these sources with nearly every other book written about the queen into an often sympathetic portrait." - Cara Mio DiMassa 10/21/2001

A Small Archduchess

"Her Majesty has been very happily delivered of a small, but completely healthy Archduchess."

Count Khevenhuller, Court Chamberlain, 1755

On 2 November 1755 the Queen-Empress was in labour all day with her fifteenth child. Since the experience of childbirth was no novelty, and since Maria Teresa, Queen of Hungary by inheritance, Empress of the Holy Roman Empire by marriage, hated to waste time, she also laboured in another way at her papers. For the responsibilities of government were not to be lightly cast aside; in her own words: "My subjects are my first children." Finally, at about half past eight in the evening in her apartments at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Maria Teresa gave birth. It was a girl. Or, as the Court Chamberlain, Count Khevenhuller, described the event in his diary: "Her Majesty has been happily delivered of a small, but completely healthy Archduchess.&
