Maria Hernandez is a poor but beautiful 15-year-old girl, who must scavenge food to keep herself and her elderly godmother alive. When her godmother dies, she becomes the ward of Don Fernando de la Vega. Unfortunately for Maria, her presence is greatly resented by Victoria de la Vega and her niece, Soraya Montenegro. Maria finds herself falling in love with the handsome but drunken son of the house, Luis Fernando, arousing the jealousy of Soraya. He soon falls in love with her as well, and asks her to marry him. But when he witnesses an innocent embrace between Maria and his brother Vladimir, he is convinced that Maria is being unfaithful, even believing that the baby she's carrying isn't his. Insane with grief, Maria gives up their child for adoption. Though Luis Fernando returns and they adopt a child together, she never loses hope of finding her lost son. But if that weren't enough, she also must contend with the obsessed Soraya, who believes Maria "stole" Luis Fernando from her.

At just 15, Maria has the weight of the world on her shoulders. Forced to look through trash for food to feed herself and her godmother, Maria should be relieved when she's taken in by Don Fernando de la Vega, but as it turns out, Victoria de la Vega and the younger Soraya deeply detest her presence and manage to make sure her stay is as unpleasant as possible. Things get even more complicated when Maria finds herself falling for someone close to home, setting an ongoing series of dramatic events into motion.
