Renowned French director Francois Truffaut is "at the top of his form" (The Hollywood Reporter) in this whimsical, lively story about an eccentric casanova who loves every woman he meets--literally! Irresistibly "charming" (Leonard Maltin) and "witty" (Independent Film Journal), this playful romantic comedy is heartwarming, hilarious and highly entertaining! Bertrand Morane (Charles Denner) is a ladies' man like no other. Wholly obsessed with the female species, he goes to outrageous lengths for the prospect of a fleeting romantic encounter. But when he documents all of his passionate flings in a racy autobiography, he piques the interest--both personally and professionally--of a beautiful and provocative editor named Genevieve (Brigitte Fossey). And as the two begin to play the game of proverbial predator and prey, Bertrand is surprised to discover that he might just be the one who gets trapped...by true love!

"Truffaut's funniest film in years."  New York Magazine
"Delightful! Bubbling with the lightness of a good champagne!"  The Hollywood Reporter

Editor's Note

In this film from French auteur François Truffaut, a romantic and tenderhearted antihero (Charles Denner) pursues a series of ephemeral love affairs, attempting to capture the elusive, mysterious essence of women. This whimsical and philosophical comedy is followed by a Blake Edwards-directed American remake, starring Burt Reynolds in the titular role.

Plot Summary

Blake Edwards' remake of Truffaut's "loveletter to women", stars Burt Reynolds as the obsessed lothario of the title -- a man who moves quickly and compulsively from one romantic encounter to another. Starting with his funeral, the film reveals his life to us through a series of flashbacks, all sharply narrated, with the requisite psycho-babble, by his frustrated female psychiatrist.
