What would happen if one of the nation's funniest men became its leading one? Oscar winner Robin Williams reunites with the director of Good Morning, Vietnam to answer just that question in the comic tale of an entertainer's accidental rise to power, Man of the Year.

Acerbic performer Tom Dobbs (Robin Williams) has made his career out of skewering politicians and speaking the mind of the exasperated nation on his talk show. He cracked scathing jokes at a fractured system night after night...until he came up with a really funny idea: why not run for president himself?

After a flip comment, Dobbs ignites a grassroots movement that puts him on the ballot. Hot on the campaign trail, he debates elected drones and says exactly what frustrated voters have often thought. Nov. 2nd later, the muckraker wins - only to learn that a computer voting error gave him the victory. With time ticking on the inaugural clock, Dobbs has a big decision to make: should he go back behind the mike or stay in the Oval Office?

This election season, comic actors including Laura Linney, Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum and Lewis Black join Williams in a pulled-from-the-headlines comedy. Together with Oscar winner Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Wag the Dog), they'll show the world that - only in America - a comedian can become the country's next president and our Man of the Year.

"...a quietly spooky Christopher Walken manages to straddle the genres more effectively..."  Kate Taylor, The Globe and Mail
"...most refreshing...mingling of comedy and suspense..."  Michael Sragow, Baltimore Sun
"...Williams comes alive..."  William Arnold, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Editor's Note

IN THEATERS OCTOBER 13, 2006

Many talk show hosts harbor lofty ambitions, but few would go to the extremes of Tom Dobbs (Robin Williams) in the gentle satire MAN OF THE YEAR. After entering the race for president as a joke, Dobbs is in for quite a surprise when he proves to be more popular than he thought.

Like a politician riding the campaign trail, Barry Levinson's Man of the Year talks out of both sides of its mouth by promising one thing but delivering another. Ad materials suggest an irreverent Robin Williams comedy that aims to satirize our electoral process. Once that plot is established, though, Year converts into a low-level political potboiler that's scraped from the sides of John Grisham's circular file....read the full review

This was supposed to be a movie to uplift the American voter and give them a sense of hope and humor, and to incite change in a system that the movie says has failed them. But this is a story of unformed (or misinformed) ideals, no better than even the worst candidate on the political market....read the full review

Perhaps a Warren Beatty/ Robin Williams ticket for President and Vice President wouldn't be such a bad thing. Here's a moral dilemma for you. You are a politician who has run a campaign based on integrity, and consideration for the rights of the people and you end up winning the election. But in the transition period while you are waiting to take office someone approaches you and tells you that the only reason you won was because of a computer glitch that caused you to be declared winner in spite of not having the most votes....read the full review

Talk about a movie with an identity problem! Man of the Year doesn't know what it wants to be and, because of this indecision calls to mind a well-worn phrase: "Jack of all trades, master of none." The film contains elements of a comedy, a thriller, a political satire, and a romance, but all are given short shrift...Man of the Year rightly senses that the climate is ripe for fusing politics and comedy. Stewart, Colbert, and others do this on a regular basis. (Move over, Mark Russell, you've been supplanted.) For 60 minutes, the movie appears to have found the right tone and approach, then everything goes wrong. It's rare to see a production that starts so strongly finish so weakly. Man of the Year makes telling points and has a lot to say, but it loses its voice along with its consistency around the mid-way point, and that will likely make it an also-ran in the box office race. - James Berardinelli

Those expecting a penetrating satire from Barry Levinson, along the lines of his "Wag the Dog" (1997), may be disappointed by "Man of the Year," in which a comedian becomes president through a voting machine error. The movie touches on many of the currents and anxieties of the day, but its touch is gentle, even careful, and the story makes promises it doesn't quite deliver on...As a viewer, I want satirical carnage or Capraesque optimism, and "Man of the Year" has neither, though it might have had both. It's also not a credible thriller, though at times it looks close to becoming one. Yet to get really annoyed at the broken promises or unpursued directions of "Man of the Year" requires ignoring the appealing thing that Levinson does deliver: a genre-less, imaginative riff by an intelligent filmmaker on the state of the country. - Mick LaSalle
