 Editor's Note
When a couple of well-meaning slackers, T.S. (Jeremy London) and Brodie (Jason Lee), lose their girlfriends, they set about trying to reclaim their pride (and their ladies) in the most obvious of places--the mall. Once there, the pair push the limits of decency and mall etiquette, encountering an array of mall denizens, including Jay and Silent Bob from CLERKS and legendary comic book creator Stan Lee. A surprising number of misadventures ensue, bringing the boys the possibility of regaining their lady loves.
 Plot Summary
Director Kevin Smith's sophomore effort is bigger and more farcical than CLERKS, but, at its center, remains the story of two guys who know a lot about STAR WARS and comic books and all-too-little about women. T.S. (Jeremy London) has just been dumped by girlfriend Brandi (Claire Forlani), while Brodie has finally played too many games of Sega hockey for Rene (Shannen Doherty). The boys go to the mall to console themselves around establishments such as Burning Flesh tanning salon, Rug Munchers carpet outlet, and Buy Me Toys, but they can't seem to stay out of trouble. Their misadventures finally come to focus around Brandi's involvement in a DATING GAME-like show being taped in the mall. While trying to win back their respective girlfriends, the duo manage to do quite a bit of damage with the aid of Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith), who have even less to do on a Saturday in suburban New Jersey than T.S. and Brodie. Smith's ability to evoke the settings of his youth is as sharp and unerring as ever, while most of the ensemble delights in chewing the scenery--especially Michael Rooker as Brandi's game-show producer father and Ben Affleck as a slacker-hating thug.

5 of 5 Awesome Movie Tuesday, September 10, 2002 Andrew G from Melbourne, VIC
The best book to movie translation I have ever seen, plus it is one of the most beautifully made movies I have yet to see, get it, you will not be disappointed. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 See it! Tuesday, June 25, 2002 Mr. Guineapig from NJ
This film is an overlooked gem. We first saw it on VHS, *after* it died at the box office. At least it is getting the cult following it deserves! Now that it's on DVD, it's bigger, better and yes - it withstands the test of time. The jokes are still as funny now as when it was released.
Any Central NJ residents will get a smile from the "Route 1 Flea Market" scenes (ironically, the place was torn down for an 18-screen theatre).
You will either love this movie and have to own it, or you won't like it at all. The price for the "Collector's Edition" is worth it when you consider all the extras. It's especially helpful because you get to see how the "suits" ruined the original release. At least now some of the rough edges are smoothed and you can get a better idea of what the full storyline was. If all the positive reviews aren't enough, then go rent a copy, watch it and *then* buy your own!

When I first heard about this movie, I thought another film for the scrap-pile, until I heard
that Kevin Smith directed it. I had just finished
seeing 'Clerks' which was beyond hysterically
funny. So, I knew that I loved his honest
everyguy-type humor. The plot's not the greatest,
but that really doesn't matter. The film is just fun to watch. It has a real juvenile sense of
humor, but it comes off as fresh and real. Director Kevin Smith, knows exactly what the youth
of today respond to. Jay and Silent Bob will keep
you rolling as well, so check it out.... Was this review helpful?

Even if this dvd is on the expensive side, just the extras alone are worth the price. They have an additional 20 minutes of the original beginning to Mall Rats. And all the little tidbits and I never noticed which makes total sense when you see the extra footage. The audio comentary and being able to see them talk in a little window when you watch the actual flick makes it that much cooler. BUY THIS NOW!!! It will never collect dust. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Sweet Thursday, February 24, 2000 Nomez from Prescott, AZ
This is by far my favorite of the Kevin Smith movies. I have to see Clerks a few more times though, I didnt think it was as great as everyone said it was. I seriously think Jason Lee is one of the funnyest guys out there. The conversations in all of Smith's movies are awesome. Most of the greatest comedies of all time are based around conversational comedy(I think I made that term up). Every Kevin Smith movie is based on it and all of my other favorites use it as well. 5 of 5 Kevin Smith does it again! Wednesday, February 09, 2000 justin from Kalaheo, HI
Mallrats is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Like Clerks, it's even better the second time around. Jay & Silent Bob rule!

3 of 5 Keep trying Kevin! Friday, February 04, 2000 A Viewer from Los Angeles
Was I watching the same 'Mallrats' as the 'buds' who gave the movie a 10/10 rating? The one I saw was pretty lame. I think Kevin Smith does a good job at writing dialogue but that's about it. Sorry 'dudes' but I would pass on this flick. Keep trying Kevin, you'll eventually get it right...or just keep on using Selma Hayek. Now that's a formula thats works. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 kevin culters unite Thursday, January 06, 2000 kelly from austin, texas
where it all began, more or less. clerks was cool, but kevin smith dispensed with all his original actors, except for jay and silent bob of course, and mallrats is where the new generation began. in my opinion, there is none cooler than jason lee, who plays brodie in this movie (and azrael, the hell-demon in dogma). he can make any line funny, but of course he's helped by kevin's brilliant writing. this is the silliest of smith's movies, and for that it's totally fun. 5 of 5 2 young PImpz Tuesday, December 28, 1999 PImp Jay from plano
Mallrats is an exceptional comedy which includes 2 famous young pimps; Jay and Silent Bob. Causing havoc is nothing new to these two guys. After watching Mallrats, you learn to look up to Jay and Silent Bob Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Cult Classic Sunday, December 26, 1999 Tom from Phoenix Arizona
The funny thing about this movie, is that in the timeline of the movie, it actually took place before Clerks. However, Mallrats came out after Clerks. There are lots of commonalities between the two movies, and if you watch one, you'll no doubt like the other. Jay & Silent Bob, pure genius. Brodie is a thinking mans comedian, TS is a great sidekick. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A Look into the Mind of Kevin Smith Wednesday, December 15, 1999 the fall guy from houston, tx
The Mallrats DVD is a great buy in of itself, but the special edition features make it all the more worth while. The edition displays why the offbeat film did so badly. The View Askew documentary included shows the viewer just what Smith had to put up with while shooting the picture: Too much money (believe it or not)a producer who wanted nudity but no language, and a constant attempt to dump Jason Mewes and insert Seth Green (which in my opinion like taking the Hardy out of the Laurel and Hardy). The commentary is much better than the other two movies (experience helps)and the set up is very professional. A job well done. Was this review helpful?

4 of 5 Funny, but lags later on in the film.. Saturday, October 23, 1999 diedrit from Santa Cruz CA
AS watching the movie, the flick is truly a 'flick'. its not a film and must be accepted as so. It is funny but don't look for substance here. Also, the plot kinda gets soggy at the end, especially when the jokes of brodie (Jason Lee) fall flat. its a good comedy with some romance thrown in. the end is just kinda drawn out. 5 of 5 Snoogins!!! Sunday, October 10, 1999 NIke0070 from
I first watched Mallrats and then watched clerks. Cause from what I understand Mallrats is the presquel to Clerks and in my opinion Mallrats was a comedy that had a new feel to it for me. At first I thought it was ok but after a second watch I got to like it even more and eventually I bought the dvd's collectors edition. Clerks was also good but I just could relate more to mallrats even though Kevin Smith claims it was a flop compared to Clerks. Over the last couple of weeks of watching Mallrats and Clerks I've become a fan of Jay and Silent Bob and look foward to Dogma. Snoochie Boochies. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Overlook Brilliance Friday, September 10, 1999 Murray from Atlanta, GA
Kevin Smith's Sophmore slump, is no slouch. A hilarious mixture of 80's John Hughes style Teen Comedy and 70's Animal House no holds-barred-raunch. Jason Lee emerges from this film as a breakout comedic star, who's all-yelling performance truly must be Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 One of the Best Comodies of Our Time Wednesday, September 01, 1999 A Viewer from Piedmont, CA
This movie will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. Not only is the plot beautifully written. Jason Lee and Jeremy London protray their parts with talent and grace. This movie is better than Clerks or Chasing Amy. I highly recommend you add it to you video colection!! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Awesome! Friday, August 20, 1999 V C from Stockton, CA
This movie was totally hilarious and the only thing that Shannon Dougherty has ever been in that was any good. Kevin Smith is an absolute genius. You must watch this movie, but not before watching Clerks. Then, immediately following this movie, watch Chasing Amy. Then, wait for Dogma, 'cause that movie is gonna rock like all the rest of them! 5 of 5 Is Mallrats worth it? Saturday, June 26, 1999 The Penny Bandit from Chicago, IL
Mallrats, part of Kevin Smith's New Jersey Trilogy, maybe out of context of Clerks and Chasing Amy, but is worth a watch. It has the same humor of Clerks but with an added slapstick thing to it. Kevin Smith leaves the slapstick in Chasing Amy, but Mallrats is the only movie that has a fortune teller with a third... umm... You have to see yourself. Was this review helpful?
