4 of 5 Good GPS for the money... Thursday, May 07, 2009
A Customer from NJ

Works well but sometimes does take a while (3-4 min) to locate the satellite. Bluetooth is just OK. Recently stopped working accepting calls but can make calls. Sound level a little too low even when it does work. Screen size and clarity very good. Overall good value for the $$ as a GPS. Even with the small issues I would buy again.

5 of 5 Excellent GPS Saturday, March 28, 2009
A Customer from Glendale, CA
Works well. Haven't bought expensive units since the inexpensive ones work well. Like all GPSes that I've used, most applicable in the last mile if you already know the major routes.

5 of 5 Outstanding GPS @ a great price!! Sunday, November 16, 2008
Robert Belden from Land O'Lakes, FL
I have been waiting for more than a few yrs. for the prices to drop to take the plunge and buy my first GPS. I purchased this same refurbed. Maestro 4040 CompUSA for $99 about 3-1/2 wks. ago. I wanted to use it for at least 3 wks.(and even took it on an airplane) before writing my review. I also wanted to update to the unit's latest firmware. First off, the unit looked like brand new, no scratches; perfect condition. This unit worked great, right out of the box. The unit also has outstanding GPS. sat. reception - I get 4 solid bars inside my home, my garage and 3-4 bars inside a jet going at 550 MPH! Like all GPS', acquisition times can vary a bit, but for the most part, the 4040 is as fast, if not faster than most other units, period. The kit comes with home and car chargers, an owner’s manual on CD, as well as a Li-Ion built in batt. The windshield bracket is solid and mounts securely. The 4.3" screen is wide and bright and you can even select an auto-night time mode. The maps and voice are clear and easy to follow and tracking is very precise - well within the 3-5 meters advertised. Keying in the "go-to" address was easy and the unit even helps you do it a bit quicker. You even have several route options for highway, local, fastest, shortest, or no toll road choices. The touch screen works well and there are a ton of useful menu items - all of which you get more used to, as you use the unit. The more I used it, the more impressed I was. There are also 4.5 million POIs - wow! Much more than what I have seen on other units costing a lot more. The Blue Tooth pairing set-up was real easy and worked/sounded great hands free with my Samsung Cell phone. No GPS out there has flawless maps and navigation, make no mistake!! This unit does an outstanding job in every way and is as close as you can get to near-perfect; especially at this price point. I am 100% pleased with my purchase and it was well worth the price paid and much more!! Two minor drawbacks are a 90 day warranty and the maps are dated back to 2006. These should be only very minor issues for almost everybody. You can purchase the updated maps for $65 if you either are or know a AAA member, or $79 reg. price. You also have the option for the traffic report kit/svc. and an upgrade to voice command as well. You can NOT go wrong with this unit at this price!!

5 of 5 Great GPS for Price Monday, November 10, 2008
BL from Salem, NH
This is my first GPS and it works great. For less than $100 dollars it is a great buy. The only con is it does not come with the latest map. Not a big deal if you are ok with a couple year old map. I would buy it again.

5 of 5 Be sure to turn completely OFF Thursday, October 30, 2008
LS from Fort Smith, Arkansas
I had a short battery life and found I was just putting the unit in standby instead of shutting it down. Hold the off button in for 5 or more seconds to completely shut down. Battery seems to last longer now.

5 of 5 Great GPS for a low price! Saturday, October 25, 2008
Lucky from Orlando, FL
At the low price of less than $100, this GPS is an awesome value buy. Pro's: bigger screen size, loud and clear volume, bluetooth connectivity, text-to-speech commands. Con's: you have to pay to update the maps on the first try, others give you the first update free. I didn't go wrong on this purchase.

5 of 5 Great GPS Thursday, October 16, 2008
Ann Deskiewicz from Buffalo, NY
I bought this Magellan 4040 after doing some research. It had all of the features I was looking for at a great price. I've used it for several trips already and it is very easy to use, very accurate and has been quite handy. I had to go out of town for a business meeting and didn't have any idea where I was going. I programmed the Magellan and it got me there without a problem. I would recommend this model to anyone. The screen size is great and easy to see, the text-to-speech feature is priceless - very clear and easy to follow.

5 of 5 Value for money Wednesday, October 15, 2008
A Customer from Forest Park, IL
I bought this product a month ago....and works well right off the package. It has a excellent satellite reception, easy to use and is a Sophisticated device for the below $100 price. The only few drawbacks that I observed is that is slow to react on detour and battery life is only about an hour, probably because of the large display. Nevertheless steal for the price...........

5 of 5 Fantastic GPS Unit Wednesday, October 15, 2008
A Customer from Davis, CA
I've tried every bell and whistle on this unit and it is working beautifully. It came with the latest firmware update installed, nice accessories (chargers, mount, case), but old maps. I needed to pay for a current map update ($65 with AAA discount). Should have bought more at $100 for the refurbished units before they sold out.

5 of 5 VERY PLEASED Tuesday, October 14, 2008
Happy customer from Raleigh, NC
I got this GPS within 3 days after i ordered from Buy.com. This unit is fabulous for the price. Picks up a signal right away. It also works in the house. I have other units lose their signal in the garage. Make it easier to plan your trip when in the house. Can't beat the price. I will buy another unit if this comes back on Buy.com

5 of 5 Very happy with this GPS Saturday, October 11, 2008
A Customer from Ohio
Picks up a signal right away, even inside. Easy to set up a route. Very accurate voice guidance. ETA accurate within one minute; it changes as you go based on your speed. I had a hard time figuring out how to save a current position but once I did it's easy (have to press the direction indicator in the upper left hand corner.) Map display shows everything you need and nothing more. I went over a bridge that is about four years old and it didn't recognize it. It told me to make a U turn, but once across the bridge it instantly calculated a new route. The routing and new routing calculations are very fast. It hasn't missed a turn yet. Very happy with this GPS and the price can't be beat. Refurbished but looks like new.

2 of 5 Barely worth the money Friday, October 10, 2008
A Customer from atlanta, ga
Pros:
- big bright touchscreen
- clear and readable maps
- strong GPS signal reception and good tracking
- decent text-to-speach for street names
- decent price (given the alternatives)

Cons:
- factory refurb unit came preloaded with old maps, even though Magellan had released 2008 map update before I bought the unit on buy.com
- sub-par bluetooth voice quality
- SLOOOOW to redraw the map while in motion - the map only redraws every couple of seconds, and the position shown by the unit lags behind
- very basic route overview user interface
- arcane user interface for destination entry and route planning
- wobbly windshield mount - the unit shakes while the car is in motion even over smooth road surface

Conclusion:
Magellan crammed in a lot of features - big touchscreen, text-to-speach, bluetooth - but with mediocre execution. For the money, I should have bought much easier to use and better-performing refurb TomTom One unit - even though it has a smaller screen and lacks text-to-speach and bluetooth.

It was very confusing trying to decide which GPS system to purchase. I am so happy I chose Magellan. It is amazingly easy to travel with this in tow. You just simply go. I drove from Pittsburgh, PA to Athens, Georgia with no troubles at all. Takes all the stress out of long distance trips. Get one. You will be glad you did

4 of 5 I was unsure about buying a refurbished GPS. Tuesday, October 07, 2008
hoha1088 from Locust Hill, Va.
This is my first experience with a GPS device and I was unsure about buying a refurbished item that I was going to rely on for an upcoming trip across the country. But for the price, I felt it was a good way to get the features I wanted, at the price I was willing to pay. When I received the unit, I was happy to see that it was refurbished by Magellan and provided me with a 90 day warranty directly through Magellan which was reassuring. (As opposed to "Joe's Refurbishes") While my trip is still a month away, I have used the unit to get me to and from work, just to get familiar with it, and am very happy. It seems to be solid and all the functions work as they should. There is no way I would know it was refurbished. If there is a downside, it would be that I did not know the map upgrades would cost as much as they do. That is not really a problem because the included maps are only a couple of years old. All in all, for 99 bucks, (free shipping) I couldn't be more pleased!

4 of 5 Quite good! Monday, October 06, 2008
mark from austin, tx
PRO's: 1) Great price for 4.3" unit 2) Good set of chargers, mounting equipment 3) Good visibility CONs: 1) Text-2-speech voice quality is marginal 2) Outdated maps (may or may not be an issue) I used the unit for a 300 mile trip this weekend and was very pleased with the performance in an extremely rural area.

5 of 5 Great Deal! Monday, October 06, 2008
A Customer from Masury, OH
This is absolutely a great unit for a great price. It does everything I wanted a GPS unit to do, and very accurately, too. We put in the address to our son's new dorm and the Magellan announced "you have arrived" just as we pulled up to the front door! It comes with all the accessories, too. Great Deal!

4 of 5 very nice for $100 Sunday, October 05, 2008
A Customer from la crosse, wi
Pros: - large POI database 4.5 million - not many have a larger one - Sirf III chip set - screen size - 4.3" wide - Text to speech - Price Cons: - map + POI database a little old (2006 I think) - windshield mount a little clunky (minor) Bought two for a friend. Refurbs looked brand new. If I needed one I would buy it. At this price it is a no-brainer.

3 of 5 Old maps Sunday, October 05, 2008
A Customer from Fort Smith, Arkansas
Still unsure if my extra $70 spent to get updated maps was worth it. The unit came with 2006 maps. Tried for a map discount through Magellan and they would not accomodate. The unit gets signal fast, and voice is strong. Battery runs down quickly. Overall $170.00 spent - which is $99 for a refurbished GPS and $70 for updated maps is questionable.

Shawn from Hazlehurst Georgia
So far this unit works great, easy to use and condition is perfect. In my small town the unit can easly send you down a dirt road or ignore the shortest routes that we use everyday, but if you have no idea where you are going it will still get you there

5 of 5 Good price on a great navigator Saturday, October 04, 2008
Kuroyama from Boston, MA
This is a huge improvement on my old Garmin Streetpilot III. The Text-to-Speech makes it so much easier to use when driving, it picks up the satellites quickly, finds directions in a jiffy, and promptly recalculates after wrong turns. This is really a delight and the price can't be beat. Two friends have already purchased these after being impressed with mine. The only things I can think to criticize are that the maps are from 2006 and that it's $90 to purchase new maps.

I've checked out several other GPS units and this one has more features than most. I really love it! The price is fantastic for what you get. I do remember when I ordered it wondering what all came with it, it has everything you need in the box, including the charger and the car charger. I am very happy with it, great deal! Oh, a freind of mine has one, same brand, older model and spent $300.00 for his. Needless to say, he thought I got a GREAT deal!

3 of 5 Navigates fine, too hard to use. Saturday, October 04, 2008
Larry from San Antonio, Texas
This GPS came with a box full of usually at an additional charge extras such as ac/dc power The 4040 looks new and no scratches even it is refurbished. The only cons that I can say is that it is especially slow, in entering address and other data. It seemed slower in every letter I enter. The display is a bit faded during daylight hours. Navigating thru the menu system is confusing, and I still do not know how to enter "Favorites". The audio is loud and clear both for navigation. The Garmin Nuvi(4:3)is a much better and easier to use unit. Pass on this GPS unless you just need map service.

5 of 5 Excellent GPS, if you can live with the older maps Saturday, October 04, 2008
A Customer from Palm Beach Gardens, FL
This GPS works very well. I had previously been borrowing a friends Garmin for quite some time and I have to say I like this unit better. Although, I have to say that to be satisfied you really need to do the firmware update on the unit. The changes in the update really made this GPS top of the line. It's really too bad that the GPS companies do not offer map updates for free, as this is the only downfall of this unit is the outdated maps. When I received my GPS, it was packed with the wrong cradle. I was worried because I read a lot of reviews about how bad Magellan's customer service was. I went ahead and called anyway. The CSR was great, she fully understood what I was telling her and that this was a mistake in the packing of the unit. She put me on hold for about a minute and came back. She said that she is shipping the correct cradle for free through Fed-Ex. SWEET! Another thing. The windshield mount, although constructed very well, was just too long and bulky for my tastes and made an eyesore in my ride. Easy fix was to buy a low profile aftermarket mount. Now it looks professional and is easy to pack when traveling. I hope my review helps with everyone's buying decisions!

5 of 5 WoW. Excellent GPS for the Money. Saturday, October 04, 2008
A Customer from Orlando, Florida
I bought this in advance of a trip to California. It worked perfectly out of the box. I used it to drive from LA to Yosemite to SF. Found everywhere that we needed to go. I usually rent a car with a GPS at an additional cost. With what I paid for the Magellan Maestro 4040, it practically paid for itself on the first trip alone. The product features are impressive for the price. The AAA guide book was useful in locating restaurants on the drive as well as tracking down gas stations on a roadway between Sequoia National Park and Yosemite National Park as we drove in the middle of the night.

5 of 5 One of the best bargains I have found. Friday, October 03, 2008
Wendell from Lufkin, Texas
This Magellan Maestro 4040 may be refurbished but it performs like a brand new one. It has seemed eager to work since I first charged it's batteries. It picks up the satellites no matter where I turn it on, and does it instantly. I can't think of anything negative to say about it. Everything I needed came with it and it all works. Buy.Com sent it to me as promised too. I am well pleased with the service and product.

4 of 5 Nice, but maps are a little old Friday, October 03, 2008
A Customer from Caledonia, MI
It's a nice GPS unit and the user interface is better than older generation Magellan GPSs. The new software is better at rerouting when you miss a turn and doesn't tell you to take U-Turns as often. It would be nice if it shipped with the latest maps, since an upgrade is already available, but the cost for the upgrade is $80, which is steep for a GPS that just came out of the box. Magellan should give free map and software upgrades if the GPS is under warranty. Blue Tooth hands free phone is a nice feature, but when I try to send a contact from my phone to the GPS, it fails. Overall this GPS is an excellent value!

5 of 5 Great value Thursday, October 02, 2008
A Customer from Scott Depot, WV
I could not be more pleased with this product. Even though the maps are somewhat dated (2006) the unit is still a great value. Being a AAA member, I was able to download the latest AAA TourBook POI's for free. I would recommend this unit to anyone that is on a budget and would like to have a great GPS unit that won't break the bank.

This GPS is amazing! It is very accurate, instant signal, and sound is great (if you are hard of hearing, this is the GPS for you). Very easy to use. Preloaded maps of U.S. and Canada. The bluetooth gives you lots of options for phone, computers, and other peripherals. Get one!

4 of 5 First GPS Wednesday, October 01, 2008
A Customer from englewood,nj
Read some comments about difficulty in understanding the voice as well as slow recalculating times. I have no problem with the voice but it does take a bit too long to change screens and recalculate and sometimes comes back after you missed the turn. Overall it's a bargain at the refurbished price and the turn around time from Buy.Com was amazing!

5 of 5 A top notch unit at a bargain price Wednesday, October 01, 2008
roadster777 from Cutler Bay, FL
Great buy for $99. You couldn't tell is a refurbished unit unless you read in the box. I'm not the kind of buyer that likes buying refurbished stuff, but in this case I made the leap and it turned out very good. I guess that a "factory refurbished item" is better than just a refurbished (or repackaged) item. But now to the functions. I've been in the market to buy an high end GPS (meaning good maps, GPS responsiveness and bluetooth connectivity) but did not want to pay over $300 for one. When I saw this great deal and read some reviews about the Magellan Maestro 4040 I could not help it but jump on the offer. The GPS has great reception and locks onto satellites almost immediately. The bluetooth connectivity is good with my Treo and I find this feature very convenient. It comes also with a voice recognition feature that is locked (it costs an extra $99 at the Magellan website) to unlock. This refurbished unit came with the latest firmware update. The only down thing is the maps are from 2006 (the new 2008 maps are an extra $79). It has maps of US, Puerto Rico, Alaska and Canada, something I value that because my brother lives in Toronto and I travel there kind of frequently. Thanks to Buy.com for this incredible offer. Also, the free shipping was very prompt.

5 of 5 More than I expected Wednesday, October 01, 2008
calpreece from Houston, TX
The truth is that it is more than I expected when I ordered it. This Magellan GPS was a value at 99.99, and now I see that the price for them has dropped to 79.95 or something in a recent email from Buy.com. Don't hestitate. Anywhere under 100 is a bargain, the further under the more the bargain. A great device and it was relatively easy to set it up without reading the instructions.

4 of 5 Good value for your money Wednesday, October 01, 2008
Gilda from New York
I am happy with my purchase of this GPS. I was skeptical about it being refurbished but it actually works as good as the new one I had which I gave to my daughter. I did not want to pay for an expensive model so this one suits me just fine, it definite gets you where you want to go without any problem.

5 of 5 Magnificent Device Wednesday, October 01, 2008
A Customer from Conley, GA
This is a great unit. It performs much better than I expected. The bad about it and perhaps it is just me not being techy - it is not as user friendly as I would want. Other than that, no complaints - love it so much I bought a second.

4 of 5 Good value, but map isn't up to date. Wednesday, October 01, 2008
Dave from Tulsa, OK
I liked all the features on this unit and found it generally easy to use, but it came with an outdated 2006 map and POIs. I called Magellan about getting the current map and they said that refurbished units are sold as-is, so I'd have to pay full price ($80) to get the map update. The other thing that disappointed me was how limited the PC interface is. I was hoping to be able to edit the address book on the PC, but only custom POIs are editable. The GPS mounts as a virtual hard disk, so all the files are accessible, but they are in a custom format without editing tools for accessing them. The included windshield mounting hardware works great, so it is easy to move it between vehicles and to hide it when leaving your vehicle. Don't leave it visible on your dash when not in your vehicle as a portable GPS unit is a prime target for thieves! Note: If this is your first GPS, be sure to read the manual. I was a bit confused at first by how addresses are entered. Its easy to mistakenly enter destinations as trips instead of just addresses.

Its really worth for the price you are paying at buy.com about hundred. I have used a new one versus the refurb but did not notice any difference, the recalculating time is low, easy to use etc....worth your money

5 of 5 Great Value Wednesday, October 01, 2008
Mimosanc from Raleigh, NC
This is a great product and the price is unbeatable. It arrived at my house a few days after the order - good deal considering it was free shipping. This is what I have found after a week of owning it: Positive things: good signal reception even indoors, bright big LCD screen, good sound. Not so positive: touch screen is not very sensitive (tend to get the wrong alphabet, for example). My wall charger did not work with the unit out of the box. I used a paperclip to clean the charger plug and the problem was fixed.
