Editor's Note
It seems that every city in the UK is likely to be proclaimed as a hotbed of musical talent at some point in time, from Manchester (the late 1980s 'baggy' era of the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays) to Liverpool (Frankie Goes to Hollywood, the Teardrop Explodes, and Echo and the Bunnymen all emerged in the early '80s) to London (the '70s punk rock explosion that saw The Sex Pistols, The Clash, and Siouxsie and the Banshee rise to fame). The late '70s and early '80s saw Sheffield take its turn in the spotlight, offering era-defining sounds via the electronic pop of The Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, and Heaven 17, as well as the more traditional pop-stylings of ABC. This documentary highlights the work of these acts, drawing on a mixture of vintage footage and celebrity testimonials to tell Sheffield's tale. Among those offering their thoughts are many of the aforementioned bands, as well as Pulp's Jarvis Cocker and the late John Peel. A moving portrait of artists working to overcome mundane, everyday concerns and the perilous financial difficulties that beset the region over this period, MADE IN SHEFFIELD is a glorious celebration of a city that continues to produce some of the finest sounds you're ever likely to hear.
