Throughout the record, Tribe mines the same jazz-flavored, R&B-fueled beats that were the hallmark of Beats. Although the "love" concept provides a thematic cohesion to the album -- almost all of the songs are about love, in one way or another -- the overall effect is quite similar to its immediate predecessor: the music is enthralling for a while, but soon it all sounds a little too familiar. Part of the problem is that Tribe functions on a cerebral level, a point made painfully clear by Busta Rhymes' and Redman's roaring, visceral cameos on "Steppin' It Up." On their own, Tribe favors craft over raw skills. That means there are plenty of pleasures to be had from careful listening, but Tribe has reached a point where it's easier to admire the Ummah's stylish production and the subtle rhymes of Q-Tip, Phife, and Ali Shaheed than it is to outright love them, which is ironic for an album bearing the title The Love Movement. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine | | Rumored to be the last album by A Tribe Called Quest, THE LOVE MOMENT brings listeners back to the elements that made the group famous: beats, rhymes, life, and the added element for this fifth album, love. Actually, Quest have always shown nothing but love for hip-hop, but as the '90s progressed, a parade of selfish, cocky MCs shifted rap's original focus from making people happy to making money. So after a ten-year run, Q-Tip, Phife and Ali Shaheed are closing down shop, but not without leaving us one last gem by which to remember them. | | THE LOVE MOVEMENT is a much simpler album than what Tribe followers have been brought up on. The Ummah, a production team made up of Tip, Ali and Jay Dee, has brought a slightly newer twist to Tribe's music. Where songs like "Find A Way" and "The Love" are reminiscent of the abstract sound that the trio best exemplifies, new flavors like "Give Me" and "Steppin' It Up" show their diversity. Still the best at what they do, Tribe Called Quest verify their irreplaceability on THE LOVE MOVEMENT. | Producer: The Ummah; A Tribe Called Quest | Musical Guests | | Redman | | Noreaga | | Mos Def | | Busta Rhymes | | D-Life | | Spanky | | Jane Doe | | Punchline | | Wordsworth |
