This was Irwin Allen's version of "The Swiss Family Robinson" which he referred to as "Space Family Robinson." He didn't even bother to change their last names! This 1st season was arguably the best, when the entire premise and each episode was meant to be taken very seriously. Unfortunately, with the advent of color in season 2, it seemed like EVERYTHING has to be in vivid, SCREAMING color! In a word, overkill. Also in seasons 2 and 3, they found a solid competitor in the "Batman" series, and very unfortunately, it had the highly detrimental effect of the series going "camp" in hopes of reclaiming some of their lost audience. I mean, c'mon! Jonathon Harris (Dr. Smith) dressed in a giant foam carrot costume?! Yikes! Perhaps they should have retitled the series "Lost Market Shares in Space" at that point. But enough of the ribbing, I absolutely LOVED this series as a child, and I continue to love it today, giant talking carrots notwithstanding. Even after the seriousness slowly bled out of it, it was totally fun and even continued to genuinely excite from time-to-time. The episode where the Robinsons travel back to Earth (and back in time) is a total classic, as are many of the other more serious plots. They even managed to carry a few of the guest characters forward into other episodes, something which was seldom done in TV at the time. I gave the entire series (not just this 1st season) a 5 for its overall appeal and fun! Was this review helpful?
