| Album Notes and Credits |
Notes & Personnel Info | | The highlight of this delightful limited-edition double-CD set (5000 pressed) is principally the unmixed music from episodes from the initial five-episode story-arc with which the Lost in Space series was introduced in 1965 -- most of the music in question was authored by John Williams, who was then much better known as Johnny Williams, and it was among the best music composed for regular series television. The mere fact that it holds up so well on Lost in Space 40th Anniversary Edition 40 years later is indicative of just how important Williams was to the success of the series (or, at least, in getting it launched). There are other composers' contributions represented here, to be sure, including Herman Stein and Leith Stevens, both of whose work is presented in extended suites representing a musical arc from full episodes; actually, Leith Stevens' work recalls his scoring for Destination Moon nearly 20 years earlier, and, even more so, his music for When Worlds Collide a decade before, and has its own virtues of subtle expressiveness, including a wistful tone to some of the moodier moments in the score; and Stein's particular episode, Welcome Stranger, is scored almost like a western, in keeping with the astronaut character encountered on the show portrayed by Warren Oates as a folksy, guitar-strumming wanderer of the galaxy. But Williams gets all of disc one to himself, and it's the big selling point here, filled with inventive, expressive, mostly ominous and mysterious music in keeping with the settings and plots for the accompaniment of which it was written -- indeed, it's surprising, except when one takes into account union and industry rules that went into effect in the mid-'60s, that his music wasn't "tracked" into other productions, much as portions of some of Bernard Herrmann's Twentieth Century-Fox film scores were into sections of early episodes of Lost in Space. The source material for all of this music has held up exceptionally well, especially given that it was never supposed to be heard fully exposed in this way, and in high-resolution playback. The annotation is also extremely thorough, and the entire package is well worth the asking price, either for soundtrack enthusiasts or, especially, Williams completists or collectors of Stein's and Stevens' work -- or for fans of the series, who are certain to revel in the musical details revealed here. ~ Bruce Eder | Producer: Mark Banning; Ford A.
