 Editor's Note
Based on an inspiring true story, THE LOST BATTALION recreates the life and death action of the first Great War. Rick Shroder (NYPD BLUE) stars as Major Charles Whittlesey, a soldier who received the coveted Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic actions near the close of World War I. A civilian-turned-soldier, Whittlesey proved to be a brilliant and fearless major when he and his troops found themselves surrounded by the enemy in the dense Argonne Forest. With no food, supplies, or tools of communication, Whittlesey managed to fend off the Germans for 5 days until he was rescued.

Lost Battallion is a graphic depiction of the realities of war. The film revolves around a unit of courageous soldiers sent out to battle the German forces in the Argonne Forest. Poor leadership at the top level leads them into a no win situation, but the battallion (made up mostly of street-wise, New York youngsters) more than hold their own. This is an inspiring story, especially in these times.
My only criticisms are as follows: 1.) The story lacks a set-up of historical perspective. 2.) Uncomfortable and unecessary use of hand-held camera in the interior scenes. 3.) Certain liberties the director took with the camera that called attention to his style and away from the story. These camera moves are fine for movies such as the Matrix (a futuristic film), but not a film set in the early 1900's.
Aside from these gripes, it is a wonderful story that should be taught in schools. Bill Mahr may call us cowards the way modern warfare is, but this story speaks to the heart, bravery and spirit of the young men and women who pick up the mantle to fight for the red, white and blue.
