 Editor's Note
With THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, director Peter Jackson has achieved a meticulous and captivating adaptation of the first book of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy trilogy. The setting is Middle-earth, a mythological land populated by elves, dwarves, humans, and the gentle, diminutive hobbits upon whom the story centers. One hobbit, Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), unexpectedly comes into possession of an ancient magical ring so powerful it invariably corrupts anyone who wears it. In order to prevent the ring's erstwhile owner, the dark lord Sauron, from reclaiming the ring and taking over Middle-earth, a motley band of comrades set out to destroy it in the fires of Mount Doom, where it was forged. Included in the group are Frodo and hobbits Sam (Sean Astin), Merry (Dominic Monoghan), and Pippin (Billy Boyd); the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen); human warriors Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) and Boromir (Sean Bean); the dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies); the elf Legolas (Orlando Bloom). Along the way, they wage battle with monsters, demons, and Sauron's evil minions, all brought to life by spectacular digital technology.Jackson's grandiose production represents the first of three films that he wrote and directed, derived from Tolkien's beloved novels. Fourteen months in the making, at a cost of $270 million, all three installments were filmed at once in New Zealand where diverse landscapes lend themselves particularly well to the mystical realm of Middle-earth. The trilogy also includes THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS and THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING.

I just wanted to help some of you out that might be confused as to weather or not to wait for the release in November. I was going to wait myself but then I found out that the release in November, though it will have a ton of extra stuff, will split the Main Feature on two discs. This means that you will have to get up halfway through your viewing of the movie to switch discs. I hate when they do this. The reason it is split up on two discs is because there are so many commentary tracks. I hope they change this, because it is one of the most annoying things on a DVD. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 This is a BIG Movie Thursday, August 08, 2002 Tim from Portland, OR
The Lord of the Rings is certainly a must own for even the most timid of movie buffs. To really get the most of this movie at home you will need the typical 5.1 set up and digital receiver of better. Per the headline this is a big movie with several scenes that will test your system, especially the sub. Despite the long running time of the movie it never really gets slow, there is more than enough action to keep you on the edge of your seat. This movie is well done and leaves you waiting for the next installment, The Two Towers. Lord of the Rings has a very special place in my DVD library now!
By the way, I am not some Tolkien or sci-fi/Fantasy nut. I had not seen this until the DVD release so my opinion need not be taken with such a large grain of salt.

I have read the books and one of the fabulous things about reading the books is how Tolkien's words painted images of the characters and locations in my mind. Seeing the characters on the screen unfortunately was a disappointment, not quite how I imagined them. Yes, it stays quite true to the book and all, and it is well made. Still, I do not consider this to be anything exceptional, unless perhaps you are a kid. This is of course not a review of the DVD since it is not out yet, but rather a comment on the movie. I thought it was pretty boring to be honest. Was this review helpful?

Although I have not read the books, most of my friends have. I have seen the original cartoon which was not even worth it.
Peter Jackson did an excellent job making the JRR Tolken book come to life. If you haven't read the books just watched the movie and you'll get the idea. I have seen it in theatre's and i can't wait to get it on DVD. The Theatrical release version will be in August but the Director's cut will be available in November. I recommend to get both. This is truly the best film I have ever seen, and will sure give Star Wars a run for its money. I am a great fan of Star Wars but this film made 3 hours seem like 30 minutes of mind blowing action. It is a work of genius and worth watching again and again. Dont miss the chance to get this masterpeace on dvd and find out how they made this great film and much more. Was this review helpful?

This was an awesome film, one of the best I have ever seen. Of course, you have to like the genre. It was presented perfectly, although there were a couple of scenes where the CGI was not that great. That being said, I am sorry I did not see this film at the local IMAX. The acting was very good, and the scenery makes me want to move. The story is obviously a classic and was told perfectly.
However, since none of us reviewers saw the DVD, these are not DVD reviews. *MY* only reason for writing this review is to inform others that it is my understanding that a special edition DVD, with deleted scenes, will be released some time in the winter (2002 hopefully). It is my hope that this will also have a DTS format, as the present does not, (and not many people have EX). Also, I am not happy when a second, better (in my opinion), DVD comes out as a "special edition." I don't think that's right.......so, if you have extra cash, buy this, if not, you might want to wait for the second one, at least you can compare the two. Was this review helpful?
3 of 4 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 A faithful animation of a great book. Sunday, April 21, 2002 Dmitri Smirenski from Sanford, FL
This movie comes as close to the original as any 3-hour movie can represent a great novel. Sure, some details are changed to better fit the format, but this is a great and beautiful effort nonetheless. I highly recommend this movie to anyone interested in great story, cinematography, and a great and important message. Was this review helpful?

Truly an epic. Even for those unfamiliar with Tolkien's work, this is a wonderful tale of kinship, loyalty and, of course, good versus evil. Peter Jackson did a wonderful job of (background) storytelling and character development, both for this movie and in preparation for The Two Towers.
I thought that all the roles are well-casted and all the actors performed wonderfully. As for the special effects and cinematography...they are simply awesome!!

The Director's cut will be released in November. With 3 hrs of added footage plus commentaries, etc. it will be worth the wait. If you have seen the movie in the theater, wait until the expanded release. If you have not, buy both ;-)

I seen this movie at the theaters the day it came out. I had to see it again cause I loved it so much. IT is probably THE best movie I've ever seen, next to Star Wars and such greats. Whether your a fan of drama, comedy, action, fantasy or sci-fi; this movie has it all. Buy it, watch it and remove the eject button on your player (your never going to want to take the DVD out!) I can not wait until the DVD arrives at my door. I read the books as a child and the movie brought them to life in an amazing way. Peter Jackson has created a masterpeice that should have won Best Picture! Was this review helpful?
