Editor's Note

With THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, director Peter Jackson has achieved a meticulous and captivating adaptation of the first book of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy trilogy. The setting is Middle-earth, a mythological land populated by elves, dwarves, humans, and the gentle, diminutive hobbits upon whom the story centers. One hobbit, Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), unexpectedly comes into possession of an ancient magical ring so powerful it invariably corrupts anyone who wears it. In order to prevent the ring's erstwhile owner, the dark lord Sauron, from reclaiming the ring and taking over Middle-earth, a motley band of comrades set out to destroy it in the fires of Mount Doom, where it was forged. Included in the group are Frodo and hobbits Sam (Sean Astin), Merry (Dominic Monoghan), and Pippin (Billy Boyd); the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen); human warriors Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) and Boromir (Sean Bean); the dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies); the elf Legolas (Orlando Bloom). Along the way, they wage battle with monsters, demons, and Sauron's evil minions, all brought to life by spectacular digital technology.

Jackson's grandiose production represents the first of three films that he wrote and directed, derived from Tolkien's beloved novels. Fourteen months in the making, at a cost of $270 million, all three installments were filmed at once in New Zealand where diverse landscapes lend themselves particularly well to the mystical realm of Middle-earth. The trilogy also includes THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS and THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING.

...the real deal, a movie epic that pops your eyes out, piles on thrills and fun, and yet stays intimately attuned to character... Jackson is the wizard who gets it right... It's an amazing achievement, with a script...that never allows computer-generated marvels to overwhelm the personal story. - Peter Travers

San Francisco Examiner 9 of 10
The astonishing set designs are overwhelming... Jackson and his writers create a real world with its own logic, and they never betray that by pandering to us... an accomplished movie for everyone who ever longed to hit the road and who welcomes adventure. I just wish there was a way to see the whole thing right now... - Jeffrey M. Anderson

5 of 5 This is why DVDs were invented! Monday, August 18, 2003
rh from Upstate, NY

Take a ripping story, wonderful artistic vision, insane attention to detail, and 4 DVD disks: you get the 'must-have' movie collector's item. Even if the story is not your all time favorite, this collection has all that a movie lover could ask for. You get the 'Directors Cut', 30 extra minutes to allow him to tell the story the way he wanted. Then you get two DVD' (!) covering every aspect of film production. After watching this, I now understand how a movie can cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make. You'll will get enjoyment over many sittings just to get through it all - making it a a great value for the price. Buy it, you'll like it!

5 of 5 Buy it. Friday, February 14, 2003
Jay from Ocean Spring MS
If you are an aspiring director . . . buy this movie. If you are not . . . buy this movie. Thoroughly entertaining. Runs very long, as if the theatrical release wasn't long enough, but very enjoyable. The extra's are great. They really put you at the filming and show how clever Jackson was. I can see this as required material in film class. Tolkien would be proud.

5 of 5 LoTR Monday, December 30, 2002
Paul from Madison, WI
This DVD is pretty neat. All of the units that were part of making the film got together, and instead of just adding deleted scenes on a submenu in the movie, they inserted them into the movie, completly finished, special effects all done, so that you really can't even tell when you're watching one of the new scenes unless you're running the commentary. But as with any recreation of a book to a movie, there are parts still missing. But a director has his write to take artistic license and produce his version of the story.

5 of 5 Outstanding Sunday, December 29, 2002
Hofmiler@cgmailbox.com from Florence, Arizona
I found the first movie outstanding. It was creative and as true to the book as a movie could get. I found the Two Towers even more real and exciting. Can't wait for the Return of the King! Howard R Vollmer

5 of 5 My best DVD purchase Wednesday, November 20, 2002
A Viewer from Redmond, WA
As someone who did not have any exposure to the Lord of the Rings books, I was a little overwhelmed by the theatrical release when I first saw the movie and left the movie threatre a little lost amidst the rapidly moving storyline.

What a difference 30+ extra minutes of footage add to the movie. I just finished watching the extended edition and all I can say is "wow". I have a much better grasp of the story and the characters were much better developed than the original release. Though I have only glimpsed the first few hours of the material on disc 3 and 4, the wealth of information and the quality of the presentation are excellent and unmatched by anything I have seen. This is definitely a DVD to have in anyone's movie collection.

To top it off (I am not sure if this is true for all buyers), my DVD comes with a movie voucher to watch the Two Tower at the theatre (it will cover up to $10.50 in movie admission) when the movie is release.

Overall, this is by far the best DVD purchase I have made to date.

5 of 5 Deeper and more comple Wednesday, November 13, 2002
Dave C. from Cleveland, OH
If you are a fan of the books, or just want a more complete version of the story, then you have to see this special extended edition version of the LotR. The added sceens add alot more depth to the characters and the internal struggles that each faces. As a fan of the books, I really enjoyed the little added details that make you go, "Cool, they put that part in too." Some highlights included an extended introduction to hobbiton, the inclusion of some of the hobbit's singing, an extended time with the elves after Moria (sp), and additional dialog between the members of the fellowship throughout. If you don't pick this up for your collection, it's definitly one that you'll want to rent to get the "full" story from the LotR.
