In this regard, they can be seen as an important bridge between the mainstream alternative rock scene of the 1980s and the jam band explosion of the '90s. As such, the group's influence has extended to an unusually wide cross-section of bands. Combining rock, reggae, ska, folk, and rap, Sublime's genre-mixing and good-time attitude had much in common with many of the acts represented here, making this collection a true celebration rather than a cheap cash-in. The best tracks are those that the artists choose to make their own: Fishbone's "Date Rape" takes the original's hyper pogo groove and kicks it up several crazed notches, while Jack Johnson puts his unique surfer stamp on "Badfish: Boss DJ/Medley." In addition, the presence of contemporaries G-Love and No Doubt, as well as predecessors Los Lobos and Mike Watt, reinforces the fact that Sublime's music struck a universal chord. | | Sadly, the tribute album has gone from being an honor bestowed upon an artist by his or her brethren to a marketplace cash cow. "Tributes" are often cranked out at breakneck pace by no-name imitators and studio musicians, and filled with marginal renditions of an artist's material (often with even just a debut album to go on). Thankfully, this tribute to Sublime bucks the prevailing trends, and the rewards pay off tenfold. An impressively diverse cast of musicians from a wide range of styles and genres participate, showing just how much Sublime's music transcended classification. Hip-hop (represented brilliantly by Michael Franti and Spearhead's "What I Got"), Latin (Ozomatli, Los Lobos), indie rock (Mike Watt, Camper Van Beethoven), and funk-rock (G. Love, Fishbone) make up just some of the stellar contributions. It's a fitting tribute to a band whose time in the spotlight was too painfully short, but whose influence and impact will be measured for generations of punk fans to come.
