LONGING IN THEIR HEARTS won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album. It was also nominated for Album Of The Year and Best Engineered Album. The title song was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and "Love Sneakin' Up On You" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Bonnie Raitt's second act on the American stage did not come easy, paid for in gray hairs and broken hearts. But her knowing tales of grown up love and the difficulties in making it last pushed her to multi-platinum heights with NICK OF TIME and LUCK OF THE DRAW. But with the trappings of superstardom comes the pressure of making your next statement stand up to expectations. Which might make a world of difference to almost any popular artist, save for Bonnie Raitt.
Because our heroine has been drawing from the same heartland well for many years--longer than some of her more casual fans have been alive, in fact-- the casual brilliance of LONGING IN THEIR HEARTS lies in its poised tone of acceptance, in the spiritual renewal of the tried and true. LONGING IN THEIR HEARTS is Bonnie Raitt's fond farewell to her youth, but as the troubador once put it, she's younger than that now. "Can't go back to make things right/wish I'd understood/Time has made things clearer now/we did the best we could," Raitt sighs like an old time country balladeer on "Circle Dance."
LONGING IN THEIR HEARTS is about trying to age gracefully, about remembering how to live and love with the innocence of youth ("Love Sneakin' Up On You"), and learning how to sustain through trust and commitment and shared values (the title tune), even as the allure of a gypsy's life beckons. The range of musical styles Raitt chooses to express her simple truths and deep longing are as real and abiding as the bluesy earth mother growl of her voice (the closing confessional "Shadow Of Doubt" with Charlie Musselwhite), and the shivery heartstring whine of her bottleneck guitar. From yearning vocal harmonies, to taut instrumental breaks, blues, R&B, country and soul remain the bedrock of Raitt's art, her new found fame notwithstanding--these performances sound lived in, loving and alive.

Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (4/7/94, p.71)
- 4 1/2 Stars - Excellent Plus - "...a career album in every regard...Raitt is her own best accompanist. Her wind-whipped slide guitar is the first sound the listener encounters, and her playing on a variety of instruments sets the emotional tone for virtually every track thereafter...glows with hard-won grace...."

Entertainment Weekly (3/25/94, p.52)
- "...Raitt remains one of the most utterly guileless performers rock has ever produced...she's continuing to push herself and grow as an artist..." - Rating: B

Musician (5/94, p.72)
- "...So it sounds pretty much exactly like her two last albums--so what? That doesn't mean there aren't subtle differences here...sometimes the little things make all the difference...."

Stereo Review (4/94, p.87)
- "...Raitt seems less pop star than spiritual searcher. In that context, her burning slide guitar functions as more than exquisite instrumental texture--it's practically a metaphor for the sound of a heart cracking open, possibly beyond repair...."

New York Times (Publisher)
(3/20/94, p.27)
- "...A collection implicitly about an artist coming to terms with middle age, outlasting or outgrowing old themes and influences, LONGING throws down a new challenge to the mass audience Ms. Raitt has worked so long and hard to attract..."
