Four U.S. Navy SEALs fought to the death against 150 armed Taliban in the Afghan mountains. Now, two years later, the lone SEAL survivor pens this spellbinding, first-hand account, a heartbreaking, yet inspiring story of heroism, courage, and sacrifice. 8-page b & w photo insert.

From The Publisher:
On a clear night in late June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in northern Afghanistan for the mountainous Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. Less then twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs remained alive. This is the story of fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle in the mountains that led, ultimately, to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. But it is also, more than anything, the story of his teammates, who fought ferociously beside him until he was the last one left-blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing. Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe, who risked everything to protect him from the encircling Taliban killers.A six-foot-five-inch Texan, Leading Petty Officer Luttrell takes us, blow-by-blow, through the brutal training of America's warrior elite and the relentless rites of passage required by the Navy SEALs. He transports us to a monstrous battle fought in the desolate peaks of Afghanistan, where the beleaguered American team plummeted headlong a thousand feet down a mountain as they fought back through flying shale and rocks. In this rich , moving chronicle of courage, honor, and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers one of the most powerful narratives ever written about modern warfare-and a tribute to his teammates, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Annotation:
In 2005, Marcus Luttrell and his four-man Navy SEAL team were in the mountains along the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan hunting down a dangerous al Qaeda leader. The mission, Operation Redwing, suddenly came into jeopardy when they stumbled into a group of goat herders. They had two choices: kill the unarmed men, a violation of the rules of engagement, or let them go, risking discovery. Luttrell voted to let them go--a decision he has regretted ever since. Soon the team was surrounded by 80-100 al Qaeda warriors and not only did Luttrell's comrades die, but a quick-response helicopter carrying 16 other soldiers was also shot down. Luttrell himself was badly wounded, but managed to crawl seven miles to a Pustan village, where the villagers, obeying their ancient customs of hospitality, and risking a massacre at the hands of al Qaeda, hid Luttrell and nursed him back to health. In his best-selling memoir, Luttrell tells the harrowing account of the worst disaster in Navy SEAL history and his own miraculous survival.

Chapter One

To Afghanistan ... in a Flying Warehouse

This was payback time for the World Trade Center. We were coming after the guys who did it. If not the actual guys, then their blood brothers, the lunatics who still wished us dead and might try it again.

Good-byes tend to be curt among Navy SEALs. A quick backslap, a friendly bear hug, no one uttering what we're all thinking: Here we go again, guys, going to war, to another trouble spot, another half-assed enemy willing to try their luck against us ... they must be out of their minds.

It's a SEAL thing, our unspoken invincibility, the silent code of the elite warriors of the U.S. Armed Forces. Big, fast, highly trained guys, armed to the teeth, expert in unarmed combat, so stealthy no one ever hears us coming. SEALs are masters of strategy, professional marksmen with rifles, artists with machine guns, and, if necessary, pretty handy with knives. In general terms, we believe there are ver

4 of 5 Arrogance endures but an interesting story. Monday, February 11, 2008
A Reader from Houston, Texas

No doubt the movie version of this book is in the works though it does bear some similarities to an 80s film called The Beast about a Soviet tank crew in Afghanistan. The first half of the book is the author's autobiography up to his experiences that nearly killed him as he goes from humble and wholesome east Texas origins through military training. Some readers found this part plodding as he uses this as an opportunity to describe how much he admires military folks along the way and establish some premises about doing god's will and suggesting that the fault of the American fatalities later in the book lies with liberals back in America not allowing the military to get things done like they could otherwise without those silly rules of engagement. In any event, as the lone survivor of an event, your version becomes essentially record of what happened and though this story is very interesting, there are enough spots in the retelling that seem off, it makes you wonder about other sections of the book. For example, he suggests their mission is to kill or capture a high risk Taliban leader with 150 armed and trained followers so the fact that their team is essentially 2 sniper teams suggests that maybe capture isn't very high a priority. The "Pashtun" chapter is so unexpected and non-right-wing that it seems strangely true. The earlier critical decision moment that leads to the teams destruction and that of the group that tries to rescue them never seems to consider the option of withdrawing when the team is found by shepherds. Their only options seem to be kill or release these two unarmed guys and a kid and neither option is viable if they're going to remain invisible. An illustration of what bad things can happen in Afghanistan even when you are careful and super-tough.

5 of 5 Excellant book Non-Fiction, but reads like fiction Monday, September 24, 2007

Highly recommend this book not only for entertainment, but to get an inside look at Special Ops behind the scene. A little slow thru the training phase of seals, but it is needed to understand the later aspects of the book. Very patriotic for the USA and Texas. Have recommended it to many of my friends.
