4 of 5 The easiest technology product I have ever used Thursday, October 29, 2009 John Cronan from Conshohocken, PA
You may have seen the marketing campaign that says "Plug the camera into an outlet, plug a USB cable into another outlet, install the software". This is no marketing hype. It really is that easy.
When you open the box you find the camera/clock assembly, which is slightly bigger than it looks in pictures, the USB adapter, and the software disc. Setting up the camera is as simple as plugging it in. Connecting your computer to the electric system which serves as a data network requires connecting a cable from the wall to your USB port. After installing the software-- also quite simple-- WiLife Command Center automatically detects your camera(s) and displays its/their video feed(s).
The video is color and more than adequate in quality for the purpose. If the engineers made a slight tradeoff of image quality for the ease of use that comes with X10, they made the right decision. The motion detection is quite effective at capturing anything of interest without eating up terabytes of drive space.
The only problem I have with the product is this: I live in an apartment. If my WiFi Command Center so easily detects my camera, how easy is it for other people to pick it up as well? To be fair, I haven't had the chance just yet to dive into the product's features. It may very well be a solved problem.
Bottom line: Effective system that delivers a lot of value without taking much of your time. Was this review helpful?
