1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Great Vista support, good video quality, great for Wednesday, February 25, 2009 A Customer from Chatham Center, NY
The ultimate no-frills experience! The USB 2.0 camera package comes in a small white box with the camera, a camera stand, and a driver CD. Vista supports the camera out of the box, so driver software is not required. Even if you install the software, minimal crapware comes in the package. I bought two - one for me and one for my son to install on his older Windows XP box. Video was a little jumpy on his computer, but not intolerable.
Highly recommended! Was this review helpful?
3 of 3 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 good Linux support, decent video quality Tuesday, January 27, 2009 steve from connecticut
This camera is UVC (USB video class) compliant so it will work on any modern operating system, including the ones traditionally ignored by hardware vendors, without any device-specific drivers. Video capture up to 640x480 and microphone are fully supported with Linux's uvcvideo and snd-usb-audio (part of ALSA) drivers, even connected through a hub (some of the older video and audio drivers had problems with this). The driver also created an evdev device presumably for the snapshot button but I haven't tested it.
Video quality is about the same as analog TV, with a tiny bit of noise and motion blur (with such a tiny lens you can't really hope for any better). Native resolution is 640x480, also works at QVGA, CIF and QCIF for applications that uses smaller sizes. The framerate isn't constant: under low light levels it seems to increase the exposure time, so the image stays very bright but it can drop from the nominal 30 fps to about 5 or 8. Full resolution seems to require MJPEG mode which isn't handled by all v4l apps (try using libv4l2convert.so if your program complains about invalid pixel formats).
Sound is about the same as a normal PC microphone, not extremely sensitive but no noticeable noise either. I also noticed that the capture volume has to be a little less than maximum or else it will be completely silent.
It also comes with a second mounting bracket that can attach to a standard tripod screw. Was this review helpful?
