Live it up today, your time is up tomorrow. In the Year of the City 2274, humans forsake the ravaged outer environment by living in a vast, bubbled metropolis. There, computerized servo-mechanisms provide all needs and everyone can pursue endless hedonism. Endless, that is, until Lastday. That's when anyone who's 30 must submit to Carrousel, a soaring, spinning trip to eternity and supposed rebirth.

The screen's first use of laser holography provides some of the sci-fi kicks in this post-apocalyptic saga honored with a Special Achievement Academy Award for Visual Effects. Michael York plays Logan 5, a government Sandman authorized to terminate Runners fleeing Carrousel. Logan is almost 30. Catch him if you can.

In a 23rd-century world of pleasure and perfection, Logan's job is to kill anyone past the age of 30. But when his turn for sacrifice comes (at age 30), he decides to flee the bubble-domed paradise and find a mythical "sanctuary" that lies outside. Ambitious, entertaining science fiction based on the novel by William Nolan and George Clayton. Academy Award Nominations: 2, including Best Cinematography.


Plot Summary

The year is 2274, civilization exists under a huge dome, and everyone is encouraged to lead a pleasure-filled lifestyle. There's just one hitch: no one is allowed to live past the age of 29. This doesn't sit well with three friends, who decide to escape from their domed (and doomed) existence.

It's almost a tragedy how many newer films are foregoing strong storyline for insane, action-packed CGI graphics. I enjoy special effects as much as the next guy, however it will never replace a cool story that makes you think. Logans Run will inexplicably sink down into you, especially those around the age of 30. You'll love the social and economic implications of a perfect society built into a bubble in post apocalyptic Earth. If you can get past the cheese, the wine is very fine.

Sometime in the 23rd Century... the survivors of war, overpopulation and pollution are living in a great domed city, sealed away from the forgotten world outside. Here, in an ecologically balanced world, mankind only lives for pleasure. freed by the servo-mechanisms which provide everything. There's just one catch. Life must end at thirty, unless reborn in the fiery ritual of carrousel.
