The Only Thing You Can't Have in This Perfect World of Total Pleasure is Your 30th Birthday...Logan is 29.

Features: DVD, Widescreen, Dolby Digital (5.1), English, French, Subtitled

Live it up today, your time is up tomorrow. In the Year of the City 2274, humans forsake the ravaged outer environment by living in a vast, bubbled metropolis. There, computerized servo-mechanisms provide all needs and everyone can pursue endless hedonism. Endless, that is, until Lastday. That's when anyone who's 30 must submit to Carrousel, a soaring, spinning trip to eternity and supposed rebirth.

The screen's first use of laser holography provides some of the sci-fi kicks in this post-apocalyptic saga honored with a Special Achievement Academy Award for Visual Effects. Michael York plays Logan 5, a government Sandman authorized to terminate Runners fleeing Carrousel. Logan is almost 30. Catch him if you can.

"...a very interesting and entertaining piece of classic science fiction cinema."  Dragan Antulov, Rec.Arts.Movies.Reviews
"...a nice sci-fi thriller with an interesting enough plot to keep it propelling along."  James Rocchi, NetFlix
"Sci-Fi, Super 70s Style! I love it."  Staci Layne Wilson, StaciWilson.com
"...a visually fascinating and provocatively entertaining film."  Urban Cinefile Critics, Urban Cinefile
"Jazzily effective and even poetic. Logan's Run is fun!"  Vincent Canby, The New York Times

Editor's Note

In a 23rd-century world of pleasure and perfection, Logan's job is to kill anyone past the age of 30. But when his turn for sacrifice comes (at age 30), he decides to flee the bubble-domed paradise and find a mythical "sanctuary" that lies outside. Ambitious, entertaining science fiction based on the novel by William Nolan and George Clayton. Academy Award Nominations: 2, including Best Cinematography.

Plot Summary

The year is 2274, civilization exists under a huge dome, and everyone is encouraged to lead a pleasure-filled lifestyle. There's just one hitch: no one is allowed to live past the age of 29. This doesn't sit well with three friends, who decide to escape from their domed (and doomed) existence.

Logan's Run - DVD Review

Michael Anderson's Logan's Run is the sort of silly, lo-fi science-fiction epic that only had two choices upon its release: Become a cult hit or fade from memory by the time the audience chucked their empty popcorn bags. For some time in 1976, it landed in the former category and was considered by a certain sect to be a classic; sci-fi conventions urged guests to participate in "Runs," reenacting the film's central set-piece. A year later, Star Wars: A New Hope would be released and would usher in a whole new wave of sci-fi with its sprawling, interplanetary alternate reality, and Logan's Run became destined to register as only a minor blip on the scene....read the full review

FilmCritic.com 5 of 10
In the future, it's gonna look a lot like the '70s. We'll wear monochrome jumpsuits, there will be glitter everywhere, and of course we'll have to live under plastic domes on account of the nukes. Oh, and escalators everywhere. Logan's Run has a compelling idea (forced suicide at 30 years old... but some become "runners" as they try to escape to "Sanctuary," where you can grow old in peace) but it's ruined by some of the worst special effects in the history of movies. Still, it's a watershed piece of bad cinema. - Christopher Null

Chicago Sun-Times 8 of 10
"Logan's Run" is a vast, silly extravaganza that delivers a certain amount of fun, once it stops taking itself seriously. That happens about an hour into the film, but even the first half isn't bad if you're a fan (as I am) of special effects and cities of the future and ray guns and monorails whizzing overhead. The movie was made on a very large budget - the figure $9 million has been whispered about Hollywood - and it looks it. "2001" it's not, but it has class. The plot is fairly routine stuff, by science-fiction standards; It seems to be a cross between Arthur C. Clarke's "The City and the Stars" and elements of "Planet of the Apes." It's about another one of those monolithic, self-perpetuating domed cities we're all scheduled to start living in 300 or 400 years hence...After a knockdown fight borrowed from old Westerns, the movie's ending is unabashed cornball utopian. But "Logan's Run" has wit enough to work on such a level; even while we're chuckling at such an audacious use of cliche, we're having fun. - Roger Ebert
