Already a huge star in the Latino community by the time of this dynamic concert performance, the dance-pop singer was well on her way to becoming a household name in North America as well. LIVE went on to win a Grammy for Best Mexican American Performance. | | Unlike a lot of commercial pop stars, Selena's slick, keyboard-heavy sound translates perfectly to the stage, and her vocals sound especially impressive. Backed by a crack band that mixes pop with liberal doses of Latin rhythm, the performer runs through 11 of her hits, putting out the kind of sexy-yet-wholesome energy that helped propel her to international heights before her life was cut tragically short in 1995. |
| | Artist Overview | | The queen of Mexican pop music from the 1980s until her death in 1995, Selena Quintanilla had roots in the Tejano music of her native Mexico, but did more than anyone to introduce the Mexican pop scene into the worldwide mainstream with a sound equally influenced by dance music, R&B, and '80s pop/rock. Selena was recording her first English-language album and was on the verge of a huge international breakthrough when she was murdered at the age of 23 by the crazed president of her fan club. In a tragic irony, that album raced to Number One and Selena achieved posthumous iconic status. Two years later, the biopic SELENA was released, with Jennifer Lopez in the title role. |
