This is the second volume from ESP Disk documenting the free-jazz trumpeter Don Cherry's celebrated 1996 gig at the Caf? Montmartre in Copenhagen. Having just recorded his first LP for Blue Note, COMPLETE COMMUNION, Cherry brought along tenor saxophonist Gato Barbieri from that date as well as adding the up-and-coming German vibraphonist Karl Berger to expand to a quintet. Opening with a relatively straight version of "Manha da Carnaval" from ORFEU NEGRO, the quintet then offers "Suite For Albert Ayler," comprising some of the free-jazz icon's most familiar themes, including "Ghosts." A wildly free version of "Complete Communion" itself can be heard, although the presence of Berger's intricate vibraphone tempers the gritty, wide-open interplay between Cherry and Barbieri.

Down Beat (p.81)
- 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he tart take on Luis Bonfa's 'Orfeu Negro' is an early example of the world music pioneer tapping Third World sounds."
