5 of 5 Great DVD Burner Tuesday, June 26, 2007 A Customer from Arkansas
This is the best dvd burner for the house. After installing a hack it will record ANYTHING YOU WANT. Great buy for the money. Get one before they are gone. The new ones can't be changed to record anything. Was this review helpful?

I am extremely happy with this product. The pros are unlimited and definitely exceeds that of the competitor products. The cons are 1) When recording TV programs sound quality is a little distorted. 2) Even after the firmware upgrade the unit is insensitive to all-region DVDs. So don't buy this unit if you need a all-region DVD player. 3) List of compatible DVD-RWs for this unit are only a few limiting your choices for buying DVD-RW media.
Overall Lite-On is the best DVD recorder available in the market.
Thanks,

I had heard good things about this unit, so I ordered one to transfer some of my 8mm and DV tapes to DVD. I updated the firmware and that went well. I then hooked up the MiniDV Sony and began to play the video. The audio broke-up through the TV and audio system. I tried 2 firewire cables and check it throught my video editing software and it appeared the Liteon was defective. I sent it back.
I received the next one and it did the same thing. So I tried a different camera and it continued to have audio similar to a digital cell phone that drops a bit.
I called Liteon and they were unaware of a problem, but did try to resolve it. Just for fun, I decided to try a RW DVD and record the material instead of just passing it through. It worked flawlessly. The DVD was fine. The audio problem only appears when you attempt to pass it through the unit into your TV or sound system.
Seems very nice. Now to find the time to make the transfers. Was this review helpful?

For the price this unit is hard to beat, so far. The model is well designed, simple to use, very flexible and meets most of my needs. Be sure to visit LiteOn's website for firmware upgrades.
Having wasted $100.00 on a Cyberhome 1500 from Bestbuy. it was a relief to have a great OOBE (out of box experience) with the 5005. Was this review helpful?

I purchased this almost 2 months back and it did not give me any problems. I have recorded on DVD+/-R and DVD+/-RW and they work fine. Sometimes I get some issues with DVD+RW but then when I poweroff the system and start again it is able to recognize it. I have recorded on almost 2 dozen DVD's and none of them have any issues in terms of quality. The 6 Hr mode has a very bad quality though so I always keep 4 Hr or 2 Hr mode.
Also the best part is I can create SVCD's on a CD-R and they are perfect, this way I can record 30 mins of programs on cheap media and still have a good quality to view it again. Was this review helpful?

The day I received it from Buy.com I tested it with DVD+RW and DVD+R and CD+R. All worked fine. I was able to create a VCD using CD+R. It was good but did not have the quality that was when I did the same recording in DVD+R. I was able to record in DVD+RW and then later erase it. Everything was possible with their simple Guider button that can help you a lot. The only thing that did not seem to work is the Chapter Interval. After setting it to 10 mins it was not working. I am not sure what I was doing wrong. I had to make chapters by manually stopping the recording and restarting it. But the recorder was not creating chapters on its own. Overall I liked it. They did also send a updated list of all types of Medias that are supported and ones that are available in market. Was this review helpful?

I received my Liteon unit on Friday. On Saturday morning I went online to the Liteon website and downloaded the firmware upgrade. I modified it to allow 3 hour recording, region free and MORE!! I installed the firmware upgrade and it worked great. It all took less than 45 minutes to complete. I do however record most of my VCR tapes at 4 hours to allow 2 per DVD. In the last three weeks I have recorded about half of my VCR collection to DVDs. I have used DVD-Rs, DVD+Rs and CD-Rs and all have worked without any problem. I would highly recommend this unit to anyone who has a large VCR collection to convert.

I bought this to help me get rid of my VHS collection. With it, in about 2 weeks I was able to get rid of 50+ videotapes in favor of longer-lasting DVD-R. I hooked my VCR up to the recorder, pressed play on the tape, hit record on the DVD recorver, and waited for the tape to finish. I'd stop the DVD-R, stop the tape, finalize the DVD-R, and I was done. Video quality in the 1 and 2 hour modes is pretty much identical to the source signal. I've burned probably 100 discs with the thing so far. It works fine with name-brand discs and "el cheapo" ones I've gotten on sale. The menuing and other more advanced features aren't well documented in the manual and require a bit of tinkering to sort out, but they're adequate as long as you aren't expecting to produce a disc that has full "Hollywood style" menus and the like... because that won't happen. But for your archival TV shows, wedding video, etc., it'll do a decent job for a lot less money than you'd have to spend to do it with a PC. Was this review helpful?
