The Wireless-G WRT54GL Broadband Router is really three devices in one box. First, there''s the Wireless Access Point, which connects both screaming fast Wireless-G (IEEE 802.11g at 54 Mbps) and Wireless-B (IEEE 802.11b at 11 Mbps) devices to the network. There''s also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connects wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly, or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as needed. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and the whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

    5 of 5 Great with dd-wrt Tuesday, June 03, 2008
    A Customer from Wausau, WI

If you plan to install alternate Linux firmware then you are the type who will just throw the included CD away. The Linksys brand (WRT54G<b>L</b> only) has an easier dd-wrt install (simple web-based install) than other brands I've used. <br><br> Linux gives it features usually only available in high-end models costing hundreds of dollars. For example use dd-wrt to set up a mesh network with a few of these and cover a LARGE area with WiFi. Or install Asterisk on OpenWRT to turn it into a phone system. Many other possibilities if you are technically oriented. These extra features make this model a good buy over the cheaper ones. <br><br> If your ISP supports it, the router will configure itself automatically. If not, be prepared to talk to their tech support or find the paper they sent you with all the info on it. You'll have to actually look at the instructions and type some stuff in. Welcome to the world of networking. <br><br> If you are the type who doesn't know what an IP address is and just wants to connect more than one computer to the Internet and wants to use wireless, then you probably don't need dd-wrt, will never use the extra features, and can save some $. Buy one of the other WRT54G... models instead. They likely can't run Linux or dd-wrt, but that's not what you are after anyhow, is it?

    5 of 5 Great Router Monday, June 02, 2008
    Robert from Fort Worth TX
Purchased to install DD-WRT on in place of the Linksys firmware. This product because so much more with the 3rd party firmware. Inexpensive and well worth the price.

DEBBIE from ST. LUCIE WEST, FLORIDA
IF YOU 'KIND OF KNOW COMPUTERS' , RARELY, DOWNLOAD, UPLOAD PROGRAMS OR WHAT EVER ITS CALLED.. THIS REVIEW IS FOR YOU! I AM A SOMEWHAT KNOWLEDGEABLE PERSON ABOUT COMPUTERS, BUT I REALLY DO NOT KNOW THE LINGO .. DID NOT KNOW WHAT A ROUTER WAS,, STILL DO NOT KNOW WHAT LINUX IS.. EVEN THOUGH I TRIED TO LOOK IT UP.. SO HERE WE GO BUY.COM SEEMS TO HAVE THE BEST PRICE FOR WHAT WE WERE BUYING. I WENT TO OTHER STORES TO TRY! TO FIGURE OUT EXACTLY WHAT WE NEEDED. I WANTED TO HOOK UP 2 DIFFERENT LAPTOPS TO OUR DESK TOPAND HAVE ALL 3 ON LINE AT THE SAME TIME-W/OUT HAVING TO PURCHASE ANOTHER LINE FROM THE DSL COMPANY. OK.. THEREFORE 'ROUTER' IS THE PRODUCT THAT DOES THIS! YEAH! OK, I WANTED TO DO THIS MYSELF.. FOR ALL YOU VIDEO REVIEWERS , IT WOULD BE NICE TO TALK 'REGULAR TALK', FOR US,WELL, LESS THAN KNOWLEDGEABLE.WHEN YOU ARE EXPLAINING... OK.. SO WE BOUGHT THIS ANYWAY.. AND I PUT IN CD, STARTED SETTING UP THE PROGRAM AND BAMM!.. YOU HAVE TO KNOW 'CODES' FROM WHEN YOU SET UP DSL, ETC. .. SO THOSE OUT THERE THAT NEVER WRITE THINGS LIKE THIS DOWN.. NO NO NO! I EVENTUALLY HAD TO CALL SUPPORT, OVERSEAS..AT LEAST THE GIRL I HAD, SPOKE UNDERSTANDABLE ENGLISH. AFTER ABOUT 1 1/2 HRS, WE FIGURED IT OUT.. THIS WAS THE PART I DIDNT LIKE. PRODUCT STATES , PUSH BUTTON AND IT SETS ITSELF UP.. NOT QUITE TRUE.. NON THE LESS , ITS NOW WORKING AND MY HUBBY IS HAPPY. AND IT WAS A GREAT PRICE! MAYBE ILL LEARN WHAT LINUX IS AFTER ALL! HOPE THIS HELPS. FOR THOSE PARENTS OUT THERE OF KIDS THAT ARE TELLING YOU THEY CAN DO IT BY THEMSELVES, THEY PROBABLY CAN! IF NOT, YOU CAN GET ON THE PHONE W SUPPORT. SEMPER FI! ..M.O.M

    5 of 5 WRT54GL Linksys Router Monday, March 24, 2008
    A Customer from Chicago, Illinois
Bought the WRT54GL specifically to flash with DD-WRT open source firmware. The router is completely stable and doing what I want it to do.

5 of 5 buy this if you are voip user Sunday, February 24, 2008
    A Customer from Cary, NC
This router can be flashed with some open source firmware like Tomato, which has a tons of useful features such as security, QoS and Traffic Engineering. If you are VOIP user, you can configure this such that your phone call will have some reserved bandwidth. This will prevent your computer downloading/gaming from interfering with your phone call. Use Google checkout or apply a buy.com visa you would only pay about $30. A great value for a router with rich features!

5 of 5 you need to install 3rd party firmware Sunday, February 17, 2008
    Michal from Bangor, ME
Original firmware in this router is pretty useless, for example you can't set port forwarding from one port to another port. Good news is, you can flash some open source linux firmware like DD-WRT and it works fine, you just need to configure it after, because it is very slow in default configuration.

    5 of 5 WRT54GL Tuesday, February 12, 2008
    elzy616@hotmail.com from Bartlesville, OK
This is an incredible wireless device. This does everything you could hope for as Open source download friendly hardware. I used the dd-wrt download, and it worked fine. It still has detachable antennas. I'm surprised the GL is not offered more widely. But thankfully buy.com has them at a great price, with excellent service and shipping.

5 of 5 Capable of 3rd party Linux Router code Friday, February 01, 2008
    JB from Minneapolis, MN
I bought this "L" version of the WRT54G so that I could flash it with the open source Linux based router software from www.dd-wrt.com. It worked great! I like the flexibility and customization it offers. The WRT54GL has more flash memory that their standard WRT54G, so it can handle the additional functions that 3rd party software provides. I bought two of these to use as a wireless bridge using dd-wrt. For in-depth info on all Linksys routers, see www.linksysinfo.org.

5 of 5 The Absolute Best Friday, December 14, 2007
    Sun from Florida
This thing really is IT. Flexible to whatever needs I have, I am very satisfied with them. I have recommended WRT54GL units MANY times to all of my clients and associates...they are rock solid. One thing...I avoid using the included CD setup, its much easier to connect to the http interface on port 80 to set this little guy up.

    5 of 5 Works great but ... Monday, December 10, 2007
    bp001 from Rochester, NY
I've been using this router for a couple of weeks and so far it has performed flawlessly. The only complaint is during initial setup, it failed the setup routine on the supplied CD-ROM. I hunted around on the web to find tips on how to get the unit functioning properly. Since then, no problems at all. A minor rub is the web-based interface you use to change router settings is not the most intuitive - could be better.

This is my first router. I've had it only a couple of weeks, and it seems to work great.

5 of 5 Alternate Firmware Compatible Tuesday, December 04, 2007
A Customer from Merritt Island, FL
Bought this specifically to flash alternate firmware, specifically, tomato. Works like a charm. Only problem is that my Vista laptop gets confused about the address its supposed to have every once in a while. My XP laptop has no issues so I'm blaming it on crud Vista.

    5 of 5 Without a Glitch Monday, December 03, 2007
    Kiet from Gilbert, AZ
Unlike the earlier Linksys router, this one worked 1st time right away and without any glitch. Didn't encounter any of the set up issues mentioned. Highly recommended for ease of usage and value.

    4 of 5 LINUX replacement for older WRT54G Friday, November 30, 2007
    Nik from Escondido, CA
My old Linksys wireless router failed, and I replaced it with the WRT54GL, based on the recommendations that I could best incorporate "DD-WRT" firmware and utilize some of the capabilities (including increasing the range) of the Linksys router that were unavailable with the Linksys firmware. I am learning the DD-WRT interface and so far it's great. The Linksys WRT54G is a good router, although had the wireless N spec been finalized, I would have upgraded to a Linksys N router. My understanding is that the current N standard (not yet official) suffers in performance and that purchasers should "buy again" when the official N standard is complete. The WRT54GL has extra memory that some of the other WRT54G models don't, which is why the DD-WRT folks recommend it for their firmware. Buy this if you decide to use the DD-WRT firmware and you like Linksys.

5 of 5 Got it quick and it worked great. Sunday, September 30, 2007
    A Customer from Leonard, Mi.
Buy.com gets you the product quick! I received within 2 days of placing the order. I was a little concerned from reading the other reviews on using the setup disk. In the end I decided to use it and everything worked out great. I was up and running in no time. I use my laptop anywhere in the house now, which is great when my wife kicks me downstairs to watch the football game!! The only negative was that it said free shipping and I was charged for it. I have a question in to Customer Service on that now.
