4 of 5 Mostly great, one problem Tuesday, September 25, 2007 A Customer from Los Gatos, CA
It works fine however there is one nagging problem with it. I use it with a Westell DSL modem and about once every day or so, the router loses its Internet IP address and I have to powerfail it. It would be nice if I could reboot the router via the Web interface. Of course it would be even nicer if it didn't lose the address! Was this review helpful?

I have been using this router for over a year, (version 2) and have had no problems with it. It is has been periodically removed and replaced with a Netgear wireless router and other hardware, but I have always gone back to this unit when the others did not work as promised.
There's been no problem with the unit, power supply or connectivity in all of the time its been in use. A flawless unit in all and an 8-port hub to boot. Good value for the money. Was this review helpful?

From the problems I am reading in these reviews many of them sound like a potential problem with the firmware of the router. There was a secuirty flaw identified by Linksys that allows an outside user to come in and control your router if you don't set a new password from the default.
Update the firmware at your own risk but I would recomend it based on other enhancements. This may not be the case in all instances but I thought I would mention it. I have installed about 10 of these units and they are all going strong. I not only change the default password but also firmware update them
Don't forget to surge protect all computer equipment. Was this review helpful?

Much like a previous reviewer, everything woked fine for a while (a year maybe) and I couldn't be happier. Now I have to power cycle the router all the time. The internal web server doesn't even respond until I reset it. Then everything works great for an hour, a day, or maybe more. I am on my second router for this reason. I used to be a big Linksys fan, but after this (and a couple flaky WiFi access points) I have changed my mind. Was this review helpful?

Buy.com shipping is great enough said. I got this up in about 3 hours because I had to set it up through my NT network acting as a hub and router. It works fantastic, I love it. I had the same problem, losing connectivity. But thats due to IP configuring, LINKSYS was very helpful to me when I called. We trouble shot it and found out my IP address for my internal network was too far from the 192.168.. of the router. If you have no network and just want to share the cable/dsl just plug it in with RJ-45 cables and BAM! You are instantly LIVE. It took me soo long because of internal network. ITS a GREAT PRODUCT. I have now had this unit running for approximately 6 months. It was VERY difficult to get setup because it seemed that neither AT&T Broadband or Linksys had / or where willing to give me all of the answers that I needed to get this up and running. I have a fair amount of computer background and was finally able to piece together the proper setup - which included downloading new software from Linksys. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would rank the setup a 9 only because I had to really work at it to get it 100% right. Since it has been setup though, it has worked flawlessly. I am very satisfied with the product and would highly recommend it. I have yet to need to reset the unit. It just keeps on performing as advertised. I am very satisfied. Was this review helpful?

I purchased this item last month to replace the 4 port version. I have had to reset it constanly, sometimes more than once a day. It loses connectivity to everything. Once I unplug/replug it, everything works fine. When it works, its great, but having to reset it all the time is a pain. I have a static IP and host a domain and I have had serious downtime due to the router. I initially thought the problem was the DSL provider, but after further troubleshooting, I narrowed it down to the router. I called Linksys Tech Support and was on hold for over an hour. They said it may be a power supply problem or a bad unit. They are going to RMA the unit and replace it, so I hope the new one performs better. I hope this one was just a lemon. I have been using the BEFSR81 for almost a year with great satisfaction - it did everything it is advertised to do and it did it well - till it went dark unexpectedly 2 days before the first anniversary of the purchase date.
Limited warranty is one year fortunately, but I certainly am more concerned now with overall reliability...

OK - I'll be honest. I have installed no less than 50 of these in the past year (the 4 port and 8 port versions). THIS IS THE SIMPLEST WAY TO FIREWALL YOUR HOME/SMALL OFFICE NETWORK FROM INTRUDERS and share your internet connection with all your computers. All software applications to achieve this fall seriously short in comparing to what this product can do. And the price is SO LOW at buy.com!!! If you were to buy a software firewall product - you'd spend nearly this much and miss on some other features that I don't have room to explain to you here. Was this review helpful?
