Sporting a bare midriff and a stylishly dark bob, she immediately set the Moral Majority up in arms with the title track's video, depicting, among other things, a black Christ and a hillside of burning crosses. The song, however, was as strong and as dazzling as the images. Before deciding on utilizing a constant barrage of public sexuality over songs, Madonna made great records. Highlights here include the sexy bubble-gum of "Cherish" and the delightful "Express Yourself." Great pop to go. | | Madonna's exquisite sense of the pop song, and suitably stylish aesthetic to match, was pushed to the hilt for 1989's LIKE A PRAYER. | | Artist Overview | | Madonna is arguably the most popular female pop singer in American musical history. Although she began her career in the late 1970s as a dancer and as drummer for new wave group the Breakfast Club, Madonna has touched upon many different styles throughout her trend-setting career, and has acted in numerous movies as well. Although her image has shifted to include looks as disparate as raunchy temptress and New Age mother, the Material Girl has always maintained a fierce business sense and a remarkable knack for controversy. Few other artists--male or female--have had the phenomenal mass adulation or the staying power of this pop culture icon. |

| | Professional Reviews | | Rolling Stone (10/31/02, p.136) - Ranked # 16 in Rolling Stone's "Women in Rock: The 50 Essential Albums"Rolling Stone (p.125) - 5 stars out of 5 - "[F]illed with nakedly emotional songs....LIKE A PRAYER was the sound of Madonna figuring out her life..." NME (Magazine) (9/25/93, p.19) - Ranked #44 in NME's list of the `50 Greatest Albums Of The '80s.' NME (Magazine) (10/2/93, p.29) - Ranked #91 in NME's list of the `Greatest Albums Of All Time.' Rolling Stone 10 of 10 ...With Like a Prayer, Madonna doesn't just ask to be taken seriously, she insists on it. Daring in its lyrics, ambitious in its sonics, this is far and away the most self-consciously serious album she's made. There are no punches pulled, anywhere... Yet as intensely personal as these songs are, the underlying themes are universal enough to move almost any listener. Likewise, the music...remains as accessible as ever... Like a Prayer is proof not only that Madonna should be taken seriously as an artist but that hers is one of the most compelling voices of the Eighties. - J.D. Considine

| | Bio | | As Madonna puts it, "I had no particular sense that I was going to be anything. When I was in high school, I wanted to be a professional dancer. That was my dream...dance just led to music and singing, but I did not grow up wanting to be a singer. Someone taught me how to play the guitar, and I started writing music like I was possessed. Writing songs. It was the strangest thing. I didn't know I was going to be a singer until I was twenty-four." Madonna is, of course, the ultimate icon. The musical masterpieces, groundbreaking videos, starring film roles, charitable causes, and now the greatest role of all--Lourdes' and Rocco's mom! Through the chameleon-like changes, all the controversies and clamor, and now the joys of motherhood, it seems that the modern woman of legend has done it all: singer--composer--producer--author--actor--model--mogul--you name it. Not only can she do it all; there is nothing, it seems, she hasn't tried... at least once! Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone, the third of eight children in a large traditional Italian family, was named after her mother who passed away from breast cancer when Madonna was only six years old. Sylvio Ciccone raised his children not only with a solid Catholic background, but with a disciplined work ethic as well. In high school Madonna was a cheerleader and straight-A student. She fell in love with dance and sometimes spent up to five hours a day taking dance classes and working out. Upon graduation she won a dance scholarship to the University Of Michigan. Finding the academic atmosphere stifling, after a year of college Madonna set off for New York City in 1977 with just $35 and her suitcase of leotards and toe shoes. Before long she had earned a spot with the Alvin Ailey Dance Troupe and, for a while, worked as the assistant to modern dance choreographer, Pearl Lange. After struggling for several years in the dance world she began to broaden her artistic horizons. She turned her energies to music, and the rest, as you know, is a historical and legendary work in progress...
