Author Bio
James Patterson
James Patterson grew up in Newburgh, New York, 50 miles north of New York City. Valedictorian of his class at the Christian Brothers school, St. Patrick's, in 1965, Patterson graduated from Manhattan College with a degree in English. He first entertained the idea of becoming a writer in 1971 when he worked as a college student in a mental institution, a job that afforded him abundant time to read. He came up with the idea for his first novel during that time, and five years later, after 26 rejection slips, his first effort, "The Thomas Berryman Number", appeared in bookstores. Since that time, Patterson has written numerous best-selling thrillers featuring the sensitive, modern-day hero Alex Cross, including "Kiss the Girls", which was made into a major motion picture starring Morgan Freeman.

Chapter One

"DON'T MOVE," I said to Tess, sweaty and out of breath. "Don't even blink. If you so much as breathe, I know I'm gonna wake up, and I'll be back lugging chaise longues at poolside, staring at this gorgeous girl that I know something incredible could happen with. This will all have been a dream."

Tess McAuliffe smiled, and in those deep blue eyes I saw what I found so irresistible about her. It wasn't just that she was the proverbial ten and a half. She was more than beautiful. She was lean and athletic with thick auburn hair plaited into a long French braid, and a laugh that made you want to laugh, too. We liked the same movies, Memento, The Royal Tenenbaums, Casablanca. We pretty much laughed at the same jokes. Since I'd met her I'd been unable to think about anything else.

Sympathy appeared in Tess's eyes. "Sorry about the fantasy, Ned, but we'll have to take that chance. You're crushing my arm."

She pushed me, and I ro

4 of 5 ENJOYED INSPITE OF MYSELF! Friday, July 29, 2005
COLBY from CALIFORNIA

I was prepared not to like this book (the only reason I read it was because I received it as a gift). I have grown weary of seeing James Patterson's name on the bestseller list, he produces mass quantities of books with his stable of co-authors (what a money making machine). Most of these books reach bestseller status on Pattersons name alone. So I took this book on vacation And ended up being very entertained. The plot follows Beach bum Ned Kelly, lifeguard, pool boy and and gofer in Palm Beach, Florida. Who gets mixed up in a botched art heist and ends up on the lamb until he is captured by a beautiful FBI agent who then teams up with him to go after the real bad guys. The plot is somewhat strained But it does make for a good beach read. Nothing to heavy, the short chapters allow you to fall off asleep where ever and have no trouble picking up where you left off - something that is nice in a beach read. I give the 4 stars to co author Andrew Gross as I am sure he did most the writting. The other book I read on my vacation was a rough little thriller "A Tourist in the Yucatan." Full of surprises, this is a page turner By a little known author who I recommend you check out.
