3 of 5 You get what you pay for Wednesday, June 24, 2009 astranut from houston, tx
i am writing from the s10e, and as you can see, i have no caps b/c the shift keys stopped working. this is the third time it's broken. the first time, the card reader quit and it is still flakey, the second time, the unit would not load drivers that it needed due to some sort of hardware error/disagreement between what was hardware was installed and what hardware the driver thought it should have. however, customer support has been spectacular. i wish that i didn't need it so much, though. i do like the unit, the size and weight, the battery life is acceptable. the build quality is not cheap, but not great. the screen is nice, the webcam works fine and I like it.
the integrated microphone only works sometimes and the same is true if you plug in a mic.
this machine is flakey. i might sell it on ebay.
someone asked if it had integrated bluetooth and the answer is that you can buy the part and the connector on ebay and install yourself in five minutes like i did, but it does not come pre installed. it's 20 bucks on ebay to get the parts.
hope this helped. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Superb Travel Book Tuesday, March 03, 2009 Eddie from Brooklyn, NY.
I bought this for school. So far so good, slim and sleek design, great portability, awesome battery life (even better with brightness adjustments)and great solid structure. This netbook not only met my requirement but far surpassed my expectations. As for the shipping, I literally got it the next day... for cheap!
SUPERB! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 IdeaPad Works Tuesday, March 03, 2009 Neil from Norcross, GA
The IdeaPad is exactly what I expected. A little slow on performance. Excellent Wi-Fi. Needs more adaptation on the screen properties. I can't stop it from telling me they're wrong EVERY time I start up. Right shift key is extremely awkward. I can't figure out what to do with the Express slot. It's fun, though. 5 of 5 it's awesome Saturday, February 28, 2009 Rossy from elizabeth nj
this is the best comp I've ever bought, i take it about everywhere it works perfectly fine, if you are a comp wiz, you may need to install software on it but throug a flash drive, i installed microsoft office and i write notes and take it to college and it's amazin, the screen has crisp quality better than my normal size laptop, there is a lot of features in it, i hooked it up with mostly all of the wireless networks where i go and it logs me online even before the comp is done logging me on. in a matter of seconds i'm logged on aim, yahoo, and live messenger , and most of all, online.
I got my money's worth and i bought 3 more for my sister and her daughter, like 5 members of my family now carry a mini laptop with them everywhere they go, is so light weight that it fits in most hand bags. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Excellent Netbook Saturday, February 21, 2009 Andrew Cronan from Williamsburg, VA
Purchased this Lenovo S10E 3 weeks ago, it arrived promptly, and has been superb right out of the box - just as a netbook should be - very easy to set up, excellent wireless reception, very solid feel, the webcam works well... I added 1MB of memory ordered from Crucial separately, which was easy to install and enhanced performance...The keyboard is a bit small, and has a few awkwardly placed keys, but the screen is excellent, and the netbook is well built... One note - even with the 10" screen, real estate is limited when browsing compared to a full-sized laptop. Very happy overall... Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Works, but could do better Tuesday, February 17, 2009 Ming from Santa Ana, CA
Cons
1) The screen seems to feel a bit small since internet explorer navigation, menu, and address field takes up almost 15% of the top of the screen. If you like to have the windows taskbar shown at all times, that takes up even more of the space, which leaves very little room for reading emails and such.
2) Right SHIFT button is too small and awkwardly located, which makes typing quickly cumbersome.
3) Lacking in RAM. After you upgrade the RAM to 2 GB, it would have been equivalent to buying an Asus ee PC 1000H or HP mini.
4) 3-cell battery makes battery life so short. How did the Samsung NC10 manage to get a 6-cell battery stock in their netbook? The high price for the NC10 is justified by it's larger keyboard, more RAM, and longer battery life.
5) The battery meter does not accuratly depict the proportional amount of battery left. The % does not match the depicted level in the icon shown in the taskbar.
Pros
6) It is small, but with the convenience of portability, you sacrifice the convenience of a fullsized keyboard and display.
Summary
Price justifies it's simplicity, but I personally would prefer a better keyboard layout and longer battery life.
If I were to pick my next netbook, it'll most likely be the Samsung. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Cute Cute Cute Tuesday, February 17, 2009 Tomer - Peace Of Mind PC from FL
Very nice and cute computer.
I have upgraded the ram with 1GB more and this computer is running
good, respond quickly and runs great.
The only thing that i think that could
be better in this computer, is a battery with longer working time. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great NetBook! Monday, February 16, 2009 eveready from Cleveland, Ohio
Perfect size, Great performance for the $$$.
Pros: Excellent Value, 10" screen is a good size (I wouldn't have it any smaller though), Decent performance for it's size and $$$. Shipping was fast.
Cons: No Bluetooth, although site said it had it. It would be nice if it had at least one more USB port (comes with 2), but nothing that a hub won't cure. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Extremely pleased with its operating ease and ligh Saturday, February 14, 2009 Tim Cooper from Covina, CA

5 of 5 For the money, can't be beat Saturday, February 14, 2009 Peter G. from Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA
For a lightweight, inexpensive (Buy.com's price was $299!) machine, this system can't be beat. Once I downloaded the unix-based Splashtop (aka Quickstart)feature, the boot up to email or Skype took only about 10 seconds. Even using the XP OS, the system startup was rather quick. Don't expect a multitasking, super gaming experience; but if your needs are mainly web surfing, emailing, skyping, and some basic Windows programs, this easily transportable machine is great. We intend to take this on our Europe trip this year to connect to Wifi and download Google maps as our trip develops. Not exactly GPS, but still very functional.
Note: If you add 2GB, as one reviewer suggests, and lose the functionality of the onboard 512 MB, I would guess you also lose the burned-in Quickstart feature. Just add 1 GB, and you'll be covered. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Lenovo Laptops are the Best! Wednesday, February 11, 2009 A Customer from Boston, MA
I work in IT, and I needed to get my Wife something to keep her off of my laptop, and computers at home. I have owned Dell, and HP laptops in the past, and currently. The only laptops worth purchasing are Thinkpad (IBM\Lenovo). They are built well, and I've never experienced any issues with my T41, T43, T60, and not I expect nothing but good things with her S10. She loves it because it's not to big, but it allows her to do what she needs (email, and internet). The system is speedy, and seems to be well engineered. Was this review helpful?
1 of 5 Very good netbook, iffy Buy.com description Tuesday, February 10, 2009 Carlos Gomez from New York, NY
When I bought this netbook from buy.com the description, heading and product information all stated that it had a bluetooth module in it. Unfortunately, when I received it, I tried hooking up my bluetooth devices to it, and was unsuccessful. After checking with the Lenovo website, I opened the laptop and found that there was no Bluetooth module in my laptop. I tried contacting the Buy.com customer support to see if we could work something out to get a Bluetooth module (I was even willing to buy it), but all they suggested was to return the laptop. I tried emailing them again, and I have not received a response. The netbook is great, it is ULTRA-LIGHT, and works perfect. All you need to do is install the latest video driver to get the best screen resolution, and people at my job are always amazed at such a beautiful design and the small size. And when they feel how light it is, they are even more impressed. I would definitely recommend this netbook for any user who frequently travels who doesn't mind a small screen. 5 of 5 Awesome netbook Wednesday, February 04, 2009 KW from Lake Oswego, OR
Buy.com always has the best price. I got this netbook because it is so light and I can use it on the go. Easy to upgrade and very good design. Run all my applications without any problem. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 great little netbook Saturday, January 31, 2009 Dave from Toledo, Ohio
I bought one of these to use when i travel but found it to be a pretty powerful tool. Runs fast and using the smaller keypad isnt to bad, i make a mis type here and there but you get use to it. Its a fine trade off for the conveniance and portability. The wi-fi is also very strong, my main laptopt is an HP pavillion and picks up only my wireless at my home. This Lenova picks up seven other wi-fi's in my neighborhood. I highly recomend one of these. About the only thing i would recomend is upping the ram but outside of that its great. Do yourself a favor . . . get one. Also the product was shipped lightning fast, i ordered it 3-5 day shipping but got it the next day. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 My First Netbook Thursday, January 29, 2009 Justin from Columbus, GA
Just it last night. Super easy to add a 1GB RAM stick. Very light and easy to tote around. Suprised how fast the machine runs. Looking forward to see how well I make use of cloud services available now that I have a Netbook. Very happy with my purchase so far. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Great netbook, Missing features Wednesday, January 28, 2009 Dan from SD
All in all a good system. Slow because of being hard drive based rather than SSD. Built Solid. Excellent WiFi range.
Main reason I wanted to leave this review is Buy.com's description being wrong. This model (418739U) DOES not include BlueTooth, and the screen resolution is actually 1024x576.
Also this does not come with ANY recovery disks. It relies on Lenovo's "One Key Recovery" system. Unfortunately if you screw up the area of drive that the "OKR" is on, you are SOL for reinstalling Windows. Recovery disks from Lenovo are $45!!! Something that every other manufacturer includes for free.
Buy.com also must hate paragraphs. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Netbook - Love mine! Monday, January 26, 2009 KWA from Dublin, OH
I bought a Lenovo S10 a few weeks ago to give me a highly portable device that I could bring to work to allow me to check personal email and be very easy to transport and not add weight to my briefcase. In my search I looked at the competing products and simply felt that the S10 is a significantly better value and product. For quite a while I have been a ThinkPad fan, so that helped as well, but in the end I looked at the others on their merits and concluded that the S10 really is like a miniature ThinkPad in build quality and performance.
As with any Netbook you have to get used to the small keyboard. I am typing this review on my S10 and am making more than my share of typos that require backspacing to fix. But you get used to it and learn to type more deliberately to minimize errors. The trade-off is worth it for the portability. The more you type the better you get.
Performance is great. Boot time is quicker than many XP notebooks and PCs that I have used. I have the 160GB version, which should be more than ample for my needs. I would highly recommend an upgrade of the RAM to 2GB. The initial 512MB is on the motherboard and can not be changed. On the bottom side is a VERY easy to remove panel that gives completely clear access to the RAM and hard drive allowing for very easy upgrades. I added a 2GB RAM module, purchased here, and did the entire job start to finish in under 5 minutes. Likewise you can upgrade the hard drive easily if you wanted to as it is right there and you don't have to open the case. NOTE: The S10, like all of the others I researched, only recognize 2GB of RAM, so if you add a 2GB RAM module the other 512MB will NOT be used/recognized. Not a big deal, just be aware of this so you are not alarmed.
The 10.2 inch screen is very nice. I think anything smaller would be too difficult to use. I use Firefox as my browser and I simply use the Zoom feature to allow me to get more on the screen at once. It is not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The Lenovo screen is very bright and of excellent quality.
On other reviews I have seen comments on the 3-cell battery and the short life (about 2 hours) between charges. This is certainly a small shortcoming, but in my use I have found that I am using it on battery power for less than this amount of time, so it has not been an issue for me. A larger batter would extend out of the back, so this is a compromise that helps minimize size and weight. You can search for 6-cell batteries and find them if you feel you really need it.
What I like about the S10 is that it allows me to do basic computing, web surfing and email anywhere I have a WiFi connection. Now I can sit in the living room with a small device and hang out with my family and still do some Internet stuff on the side without needing to haul out a laptop. The S10 (in my case, in black) looks and performs like a professional device. It doesn't have the "toy-like" look of some of the others, but that is simply a matter of opinion.
If you are looking at Netbooks, I think you will be very pleased with the S10.
