(The director of LAYER CAKE is Matthew Vaughn, the producer of the aforementioned titles.) The movie's soundtrack is as energetic and stylish as one would expect from a production of this sort, with an enjoyable mix of different styles, moods, and favorites both old and new. Ilan Eshkeri and Steve McLaughlin provide the "Opening," a tense, electro-acoustic instrumental piece that drifts along with a vague sense of the ominous. | | But just as it seems we're due for a standard program of "film music," the soundtrack erupts into the Cult's "She Sells Sanctuary," putting listeners on notice that there are plenty of surprises to come. Those twists come fast and furious in the form of Kylie Minogue's cheeky homage to New Order ("Can't Get Blue Monday Out of My Head"), the early XTC single "Making Plans for Nigel," Duran Duran's "Ordinary World," and Joe Cocker's cover of the Animals' "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." Instrumental pieces composed for the film are interspersed between these pop gems, making the LAYER CAKE soundtrack a varied and fun listen. |
