| | Album Notes and Credits | Notes & Personnel Info | | Recorded from 1981 to 1983. | | Performers include: Mario Bauza, Paquito D'rivera, Irakere, Arturo Sandoval. | | Performers include: Mongo Santamaria, Charlie Palmieri, Pepe Castillo, Chico Mendoza, Jose Mangual Jr., Adalberto Santiago. | | Performers include: Celia Cruz, Charlie Palmieri, Machito, Tito Puente. | | Though the music itself on Mastercuts' three-disc Latin Jazz compilation is not bad, it's the lack of attention to details that makes this a frustrating release. First off, and most importantly, is that the songs included are actually much more salsa than jazz, and then there are the various misspellings to be found ("Orquestra Broadway" instead of Orquesta Broadway, "Paula Moura" instead of Paulo Moura, "Rene Granda co su Combo New York" instead of Rene Granda con Su Combo New York, etc). In terms of the artist selection, Latin greats like Celia Cruz, Charlie and Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Lalo Rodr¡guez, Johnny Pacheco, and Yomo Toro all have songs included, but that's not enough to save this collection from being yet another low-budget release that shows its cheapness. ~ Marisa Brown | | Packaged to resemble a compilation from the mid-'50s or early '60s, Latin Jazz includes descarga jams from the mid-'80s recorded by Charlie Palmieri ("Start the World, I Want to Get On," "Fiesta a la King"), Mongo Santamaria ("Power Struggle," "Zimbabwe"), Pepe Castillo ("Druma"), and Adalberto Santiago ("Camino a Casa"). Though the music is excellent throughout, the sound quality is oddly distorted, as though the producers lopped off most of the treble. ~ John Bush | | Live From Soundscape: Latin Jazz features four extended performances recorded at the Soundscape. Paquito D'Rivera's "Estamos Ahi," Jorge Dalto's "Avenida Buenos Aires/Carnevalito," Hilton Ruiz's "Body and Soul," and Jazzbata's "Jazzbata" make for a sophisticated and spontaneous album of Latin jazz. ~ Heather Phares | | Though the music itself on Mastercuts' three-disc Latin Jazz compilation is not bad, it's the lack of attention to details that makes this a frustrating release.
