4 of 5 Very good for some uses Wednesday, October 24, 2007 isired from new york, ny
I was using this as a backup drive initially, it writes a little slow for that (via linksys wireless-g router, which adds to the problem i'm sure) - so I started using it to serve divx movies and music, and it's great for that - nice to have access to all of that stuff wirelessly, as well. 4 of 5 Works fine but is FAT32 Wednesday, June 13, 2007 A Customer from Dallas, TX
The NAS worked fine out of the box no problem. Only big issue for some users could be the FAT32 file system in normal mode of operation. This means file size is limited to 4GB. This is not a problem unless you use programs like Norton Ghost to image your hard drive. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 This close...not preferred for Mac users Monday, March 12, 2007 Brandt from Raleigh, NC
One thing they don't tell you: If you use it as a network drive, you can only format it for Windows (FAT32) and have it as a read/write volume. If you format it for Mac, it then becomes read-only when attached via Ethernet.
I run Macs and prefer to have it formatted for Mac OS X Extended so I can use tools like SuperDuper for backups. The only way I can do this is by attaching via USB to one of my Macs, thus defeating the benefit of a network drive.
Had I known this, I would have cracked open the wallet a little more and bought a Firewire drive instead.
Having said that, they say that the new Airport Extreme base station has a USB port for network drives. This may allow me to move the drive back out to my gadget closet...Good luck selling *that* to the wife.
Performance on the network was slow, but for backups running overnight, that's okay. Performance when connected via USB is better, but not as good as the FW drive I use at work for backups.
Bottom line: If you're a Windows user, this drive is good. For Mac users, not as good. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 LaCie 250GB NAS Review Sunday, March 11, 2007 A Customer from Connecticut, USA
I selected the product based on previous Buy.com customer reviews, and the value for the money ($110 to my door). Most of the reviews reflect my opinion as well.
My home environment:
Sony VAIO deskside PC
Multiple laptops at any time (wireless)
Linksys 54G wireless router (LaCie NAS attached)
The unit is of high quality and well packaged. The unit performance is excellent (although a bit noisy). The setup instructions are a bit vague in that references that are made to the Microsoft environment are both inaccurate and information is missing. Also, the setup should include an automated "Check for updates" option. My unit's firmware needed to be updated, and no charge backup software was available on the LaCie web site that was not included with the product.
All things considered - I would recommend the product to others.
Setting this up as a network storage device is a great option for any household. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great low-cost NAS drive Wednesday, March 07, 2007 Phil (phil from Buffalo, NY
Simple installation, quality construction and low cost. It's a great combination. I wouldn't use this drive as my main file server (low-cost external NAS drives tend to be a little slow), but as a backup drive or simple file sharing, I found no deficiencies. I'm very happy with this purchase. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 LaCie Network Attached Storage Unit Tuesday, March 06, 2007 Bob from Clearwater, Florida
This unit installed and operated without problems. All of the computers on my network found it quickly and there was no problem setting up file folders for each user.
It took some reading of the online manual to find out how to set up the various features of this unit. A simplified setup section would be more convenient. The Quick Install Guide is very minimal.
I use Laplink for backups but it is not as convenient as I would like. I am looking for other software to manage the process of backing up the files from the various computers. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Good for what it is Friday, March 02, 2007 DCV from Chicago, Illinois
Can't beat this product if you need simple NAS with no redundancy. Setup and administration are simple--I literally plugged the unit into my router and used the built-in web server to configure shares and users. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great drive, needs better install instructions Tuesday, February 13, 2007 A Customer from Frederick, MD
Great value for a load of storage and a whisper quiet network hard drive. The two page instruction booklet makes it seem like any monkey could get this working right out of the box. That might be true if you don't have any firewall software running. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 lacie network HD Saturday, February 10, 2007 blkbeauty from houston, tezxas
Took me longer than expected as far as making the HD work. As for shipping it was fast and prompt. The hardware is great because of the ease of use. I can now share my multimedia files through the network instead of slowing down my other computer. Great price and would highly recommend buying this product from this site. Was this review helpful?

Although you can re-format this drive as NTFS, doing so will make it a read-only drive when used on a network. As it comes (FAT 32) you cannot save files larger than 4GB. This makes it useless as a backup/storage device for DVD size files. This information is available on the LaCie web site (if you dig a little). I wish I'd read it before I bought this item. If you do not need to store files larger than 4GB, it's a very nice drive for the money. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Value! Wednesday, January 10, 2007 Steve R. from Pittsburgh, PA
Just bought the NAS device for my home network. I back up DVD's, desktop files and laptop files, and my digital camera movies. It works great. One note: you definitely have to upgrade to newest release. Not only do you get nicer options, but it does not work real well without the newest release. You lose your connection to it all the time. So upgrade it first when you receive it. The speeds to and from the device are good. Was this review helpful?

This is the second NAS purchased of same kind. Buy.com had the best price and delivery was as expected. Product has functioned as expected and the second unit is backup to the first. Was this review helpful?

I value this hard drive a lot. It's good performace and quality.
But be careful:
IT NEEDS TO BE UPDATED AT THE VERY BEGINIG.
VISIT www.lacie.com TO FIND OUT HOW TO DO IT.
Shipped device has old version of operating system which
does not include all nice options.
The process of updating is quite easy, but needs some extra work! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Wonderful product! Tuesday, January 17, 2006 A Customer from Everett, WA
I have been using this external (NAS) hard drive for approx. 2 weeks now. I have to say that I am very impressed! The setup was a breeze and the network found the HD immediately without complaint! If you have been file sharing with someone else, you need to give this a shot. The drive is very fast and whisper quiet! I highly recommend this drive. Was this review helpful?
