1 of 5 Uses Maxtor Hard Drive, Keeps loosing Data Tuesday, March 07, 2006

I work in IT and purchased this drive as a backup drive. The drive developed bad sectors after owning it around a year. I lost a huge amount of data. At that time I also discovered that the drive was actually a Maxtor drive. I have had so many issues with Maxtor drives that I refuse to ever purchase another one. Lacie suggested that I use their firmware upgrade tool that does not work. I was finally able to format the drive and used it until it ate more data. I would not recommend using this data if you value your data. Stay with Western Digital or Seagate.

I must admit, I'm not too computer savvy, or savvy in general, but this was a breeze. When I took the drive out of the box, I was suprised at how attractive and small the unit was. No need for the software...just plugged it into my desktop's usb port and was ready to go. Transfers seemed fast to me, and now I have the means to back up my files and extra space for vids and music. No complaints over here.

I have had my LaCie usb hard drive for about a month. The usb connection is great. I can easily transfer data from my tower to my laptop in a breeze. And, it also acts a a temp backup for data. Extremely good unit.

The stylish case could be from Clinique, it's easy to use and runs smoothly (only its vibrations produce a noticeable noise). The speed though is no sheer madness. I measured a max data transfer of 10 MB/s. When in use it gets pretty warm/hot, so make shure to have it in a well ventilated place. You might also consider to buy a longer usb cable or an extension. The cable that comes with the device is only 2 feet long. All in all I still think its a great value.

I bought this drive for backup and storage. I'm using OS X. I partitioned it into 3 drives, backup, storage, and a scratch disk. It performs very well for the first 2 purposes. A slight lag when using it as a scratch disk. Very easy to setup. Looks great. Comes with a very short firewire cable. I am very pleased with this drive.

The nice silver box could be from Clinique, the plug and play works without complaints. It's also very quiet and doesn't get hot. The speed however is not as great as promised. I measured a maximum Data Transfer Rate of 10.5 MB/s .. less than a third of what was written in the specs. So I guess it's more a Corvette than a Porsche.. But a CD Image in about 70 seconds is still enough for Daily work. Also: The cable is only 15 inches long. You should consider ordering a USB A/B cable with this drive.

it does what i need it for - backup stuff. It is fairly fast and for the money is good value. Looks good to boot. one thing is that it does make more noise that i had expected. what's with the ultra-short usb cable, I got to literally keep it next to my laptop.
