| Author Bio| Georges Simenon | | The son of an insurance salesman, Georges Simenon was born in Liege, Belgium and worked as a baker, bookstore clerk, and journalist before becoming an internationally best-selling writer. The author of over 200 novels, Simenon emigrated to Paris in 1923 and eventually earned his reputation as the creator of Inspector Maigret, the Paris policeman who first appeared in "The Strange Case of Peter the Lett" (1931). The Maigret series focuses on the psychological motivations of his characters and the many repercussions of their often psychotic, disturbed behavior. An avid traveler, Simenon published his autobiography, "When I Was Old" in 1970, claiming in it that he had slept with more than 20,000 women throughout his life. He eventually settled down in Lausanne, Switzerland in the late 1950s. |
