Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle
 Editor's Note
Actor Peter Riegert stars, directs, and co-wrote the mid-life crisis comedy KING OF THE CORNER. Riegert plays Leo Spivak, whose middle-class existence slowly seems to be unraveling at the seams, as his father (Eli Wallach) is dying, his wife Rachel (Isabella Rossellini) is fed up with Leo's behavior, his A-student daughter starts dating a loser, and his protégé starts gunning for his job. Feeling assaulted on all sides, Leo feels like he has nowhere to turn, until an unorthodox "freelance Rabbi" (Eric Bogosian) tries to help him set things straight. KING OF THE CORNER is a feel-good independent comedy-drama that sets out to explore characters and presents its fine cast with many opportunities to do so. It is based on the short stories of Gerald Shapiro.

| | Professional Reviews | Los Angeles Times "[A] warm and wise comedy of middle-age malaise, and Riegert directed it with the same unpretentious incisiveness he brings to his acting..." 07/29/2005 p.E14New York Post 8 of 10 A witty and wise midlife comedy, not only represents Peter Riegert's debut as a feature director but gives this gifted veteran performer his juiciest big-screen role in quite some time. - Lou Lumenick Chicago Sun-Times 7 of 10 "King of the Corner" is not plot-driven. It's like life: just one damned thing after another. It's based on a collection of short stories called Bad Jews and Other Stories, by Gerald Shapiro, who co-wrote the screenplay with Riegert. Leo and his father were both bad Jews in the sense that they were not believers, although to a certain degree they were observant, if only because of family tradition. What it means to be a good Jew, or a good son or a good man, is discovered by Leo only after his father dies. - Roger Ebert
