Editor's Note

Rogers and Hammerstein's Broadway musical, adapted from Margaret Landon's fact-based novel and the 1946 film ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM, makes a spectacularly successful move to the silver screen in the Yul Brynner tour de force THE KING AND I. Brynner, reprising the role he'd polished to perfection on stage, plays the blustering, headstrong Siamese potentate who meets his match in the form of Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr), the prim and proper English widow he's hired to oversee the rearing of his huge, unruly flock of children.

Director Walter Lang (TIN PAN ALLEY) presents THE KING AND I, one of the most popular musicals in cinema history, as a dizzyingly bountiful Technicolor feast. Kerr (aided during songs by the overdubbed voice of Marni Nixon) contributes a dynamic performance that is every bit the equal of Brynner's transcendent, career-defining turn, for which he won an Academy Award. The delightful score, which also garnered an Oscar, includes three perennial favorite show tunes: "I Whistle a Happy Tune," "Getting to Know You," and "Shall We Dance?"

Professional Reviews
Crazy for Cinema 9 of 10
Though not initially one of my favorite musicals, I have to say that it's growing on me. With every viewing I like it more and more. I find myself unable to resist watching it whenever I know it's on TV. There's just something about the story, the music, the costumes, set design and performances that draws me in and refuses to let go. I'm sure some of the pull is Yul Brynner, who is a sexy force to be reckoned with. It's not easy to make arrogance charming, yet he pulls it off beautifully as the impatient and intelligent King of Siam...The music also plays a key role, uplifting the narrative and adding joy to the proceedings. You'll be humming the tunes for days afterwards. A true cinema classic that can be enjoyed again and again.

The story of "The King and I" remains largely faithful to the 1946 film version, although it has been made more gentle (the characters of Louis and Tuptim survive in the musical incarnation). The $6.5 million production also boasts glorious widescreen color cinematography, showcasing the costumes and sets better than the original...Brynner, of course, makes an excellent King of Siam. His character has more bark than bite, and is often quite funny; sometimes he even gets the best of Anna, which is no small task since her character is more or less perfect. - Brian Koller
