4 of 5 OK for desktop use, but NOT for home theater Thursday, January 31, 2008 TechIsMyLife from Gainesville, FL
I ordered this keyboard & mouse to use with a Media Center PC connected to an HDTV. It turns out that it is a 27 Mhz, short range wireless system that only has a usable range of about 2 to 3 feet from the USB receiver. This is fine for a desktop setup (it comes with a 5 foot USB extension cable for relocating the USB receiver closer to your work area), but using them 10 to 15 feet from the computer would only be possible by remoting the receiver (with a long USB cable) to the location you want to use them. At this point I am debating whether to return the combo or keep them to use with one of my desktop setups, since at short range they seem to work OK (but I have only used them for about 10 to 15 minutes while testing the operational range) and I like the low-profile style. 2 of 5 Unreliable mouse Thursday, January 24, 2008 IT worker bee from Des Moines, IA
I wore out the previous Kensington set I had - a PilotBoard Laser Wireless set. It performed very well, but I use my keyboard/mouse 10 hours a day, 5-6 days a week, and tend to pound the keys. The enter key just gave up the ghost.
So, I went looking for another set. One main reason I ended up buying a Kensington set last time was that it provided both Mac & Windows keys & drivers, and it worked well with my DVI/USB KVM switch, so I go back to Kensington again thinking I'd just get another one like I had. But, I see this handy-dandy Ci70 set and give it a try.
Findings -
1) The keyboard is just fine - a little too small, but I've already begun to get used to that.
2) The 'eject' key works just fine on the mac, as advertised - no problems there.
3) There are volume up/down keys, but not a 'Mute' button, so you cannot easily set the volume and return to it immediately, you have to 'volume down' to 0, then volume up to where you were. Should have included a 'mute' button.
4) Here's the biggest problem, and the reason I cannot continue to use this Ci70 pair - the mouse just has a mind of it's own. It is unreliable when used to mark text (it just drops the place where you began the mark operation and picks a new spot on it's own - without any left-button clicking), and the same flaw makes dragging/dropping anything a nightmare... select the item, begin to drag it someplace, and it just decides to drop it someplace along the way. If you have a lot of mail folders and are dragging an item to one of them, you never know what folder it will end up in because it just does the left-button release any old place. This flaw is apparent in operation both on the Mac (Mail) and the Windows (Lotus Notes, MS exchange), as well as any mark/cut/paste or drag/drop operation on either platform.
Bottom line - I cannot recommend this product. I don't know if this is a hardware problem with the mouse or a driver issue (I lean towards a hardware problem since the issue manifests itself on both OS'es) and since this mouse doesn't use ANY Kensignton drivers on the Windows side. I mean, when was the last time you had any problem with a basic function like drag/drop with mouse? Kensington muffed this one. Was this review helpful?
