In a way, it's ironic that an album entitled Keith Sweat is crammed with guest stars, thereby attracting attention away from the man himself. No matter. Sweat turns in a typically stylish and sophisticated set of urban soul and new jack swing, all highlighted by his silky singing. Sweat's main talent is for smooth ballads, and Keith Sweat is filled with excellent selections, including the seductive "Come with Me," which features guest vocals by Ronald Isley. The album does bog down a bit with uneven material, but its high points are as captivating as any of Sweat's previous work. ~ Leo Stanley
There aren't many artists who are recognizable 10 seconds into a tune. But from the opening bars of "Twisted," the first cut on this disc, it's clear we're listening to the one and only master of the vocal slow grind, Keith Sweat. Al Green he ain't, but Sweat's nasal, midrange voice has come to define modern hip-hop-inflected soul. And these 12 tunes are the Sweat formula, beginning to end: light, mid-tempo funk, with just enough of an edge to keep your head nodding to the beat.
Throw in the usual opening layers of harmonizing backing vocals, a few incidental raps, and you've got the Sweat method down. There's some high-powered help on this record, as Gerald Levert and Ronald Isley lend their generous talents to the cause. The ladies always seem to be more affected by Mr. Sweat's approach than the guys--understandably so--so they're probably going to be the ones running to the checkout counter with this one.

Artist Overview
Along with such R&B acts as Guy and Bobby Brown, Keith Sweat helped pioneer the oft-copied "New Jack Swing" style of the late '80s/early '90s. On the strength of such hits as "I Want Her," "Make You Sweat," and "I'll Give All My Love To You," Sweat found himself with a hysterical-yet-dedicated predominantly female following.

Professional Reviews
Vibe (6/96, p.135)
- "...most of the songs on his new KEITH SWEAT are about intimacy and love....But by no means has he gone all smooth. The Harlem-bred crooner can still work the street..."
