| When June Carter Cash died in May 2003, five weeks shy of her 74th birthday (and four months before the passing of her husband of 36 years, the irreplaceable Johnny Cash), we not only lost not a regal presence but a multi-faceted artist who had helped effect significant change in American Roots music. Born in rural Virginia, the second of three highly musical daughters of Ezra "Eck" Carter and the widely influential guitarist "Mother Maybelle" Carter, June Carter began performing with the First Family of Country Music during the year in which she turned ten. Keep On The Sunny Side: June Carter Cash, Her Life In Music begins in that year of 1939 with a high-spirited young June singing "Keep on the Sunny Side," the Carter Family's theme song, with her uncle and aunt, A.P. and Sara Carter, and her mother. This exemplary two-disc set, containing 40 songs (two of them previously unreleased) recorded mostly for Columbia, spans 64 years and touches upon every aspect of Ms. Carter Cash's remarkable career as singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist on autoharp and guitar.

Born into the legendary Carter Family, June took to playing folk and country tunes on autoharp and guitar, as well as singing in a distinctive, high-pitched voice. Later, her earthy beauty, bold personality, and good-natured humor would lead to success as a comedienne and, eventually, gain the attention of then-troubled Johnny Cash. While bringing Cash stability before and during their marriage was one of her greatest achievements, June also crafted an impressive song catalog, both with and without Cash and other members of the Carter Family. Highlights here include the uplifting title track (which appears in three different versions), and "Jackson," a raucous duet with Cash that became a virtual theme song for the couple. Though June may have been overshadowed by her more-famous relatives, this collection proves that she was a compelling performer in her own right. | Producer: Gregg Geller; Johnny Cash; Don Davis; Don Law; Frank Jones; Joe Allison; John Carter Cash; Larry Butler; Steve Sholes; Charles Grean; Charlie Bragg; Gregg Geller (Compilation) |
| | Artist Overview | | As part of the seminal Carter Family group, June Carter Cash was country-music royalty. Always one to keep her musical talents in the family, she also worked with her first husband, Carl Smith (their daughter Carlene Carter would become a successful country singer as well), before collaborating with Johnny Cash (June co-wrote his hit "Ring of Fire"), who would eventually become her second husband. She released several albums with Johnny over the years, and the two remained inseparable for the rest of their lives. June passed away in 2003, just a few months before Johnny, but the pair left behind a wealth of country classics. |
