The new system is the JVC Sophisti DD-3, comprised of a main unit and speakers. At the heart of the system is a network media player that serves as the nerve center of the home entertainment set up. Like most system main units, this one includes a DVD player, an AM/FM tuner and inputs for connecting other components. But what sets it apart from others is an Ethernet connection that allows it to connect to a personal computer, allowing retrieval of music files, movies, digital images and other digital files stored on the computer. JVC’s Sophisti system can connect directly to a single computer, or to multiple computers through a wired or wireless router, providing access to files stored on any connected computer. Once set up, audio is routed through the system’s speakers while video and still images are displayed on a connected television.

In addition to playback of digital files stored on a computer, the JVC DD-3 also offers USB Host, allowing a wide range of digital devices to be connected directly to the system, including flash audio players, USB drives, digital cameras and card readers. Connect a digital camera through USB Host and the photos can be displayed on the television. Or connect a music player for playback through the Sophisti’s speakers.

The Sophisti’s main unit also includes built-in decoding of Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Pro Logic II soundtracks. An HDMI interface ensures that the best possible signal is sent to the connected television. Operation of all functions is convenient and easy using the Sophisti remote control and user-friendly on-screen interface. Total system power is 220 watts.

The DD-3’s speaker system includes a powered subwoofer plus left, right and center channel speakers that employ JVC’s patented Direct Drive technology, which provides an exceptionally wide soundfield so every seat is a good one. Front surround technology provides theater-like surround sound without the need for separate rear speakers and the placement problems they often create. The surround information is provided by the center speaker, which houses two JVC Direct Drive systems, designed using computer simulations and analyses.

The DD-3’s left and right speakers are tabletop designs – sleek black and silver cylinders that stand barely 15 inches tall. They can be used with the included stands, or removed from the stands and wall mounted. The center channel speaker is a similar design, though configured horizontally rather than vertically like the main speakers.

5 of 5 Amazing Little Stereo Sunday, December 07, 2008
Scott from Buffalo, NY

This is really an impressive little unit, in fact, much better than I would have thought. PROS: - Great sound albeit a little bright. - Small and easy to hookup - Quality build almost entirely made of polished or black steel - Midrange speaker is super high quality (best speaker in the set). Can use center channel for music as well as video by using built in surround modes and turning those levels down a tad bit. This is the best way to maximize the sound when using for music instead of theater. - Three main speakers (excluding subwoofer) have nice little stands or have simple and well designed steel screw holes to hang on wall. - Though not in the instructions, this unit can be used with NAS Boxes or Servers as well (RJ-45 Network Jack) by enabling UPnP. On my Netgear ReadyNAS Duo I simply do the following: Services > Streaming Services > Enable UPnP AV CONS: - Remote is a bit non-friendly at first, but once you get used to the little buttons and the layout, not too bad. At least all of the features are present on the remote. - The on-screen menus are poor quality but for the cheap price of the unit who can complain (If you were to buy a stand-alone Digital Media Center you are paying as much as or more than this entire stereo). - Wired only but Wi-Fi often struggles to stream multimedia across networks, and one could always use a a Wi-Fi Router or Wi-Fi repeater to make the unit wireless.
