| As the alternative soul soundgarden becomes littered with analogous mimes, the music increasingly emphasizes style rather than substance. Thankfully, Juslisen, the highly awaited sophomore album by Philadelphia soul singer Musiq (the artist formerly known as Musiq Soulchild), not only distinguishes him from his peers, but it also demonstrates that true innovators can be imitated but never duplicated. Preceded by the popular lovesick single, "Half Crazy," Juslisen is the natural evolution of the earnestly soulful, hip-hop-inspired sound that Musiq, 24, conceived with his platinum-plus debut CD, 2000's Aijuswanaseing. "Juslisen is like the sequel to a great movie--same characters, just a different plot and story line," says Musiq, whose clever worldplay and knack for storytelling often have more in common with rappers than soul singers. In fact, there are songs on Juslisen that conceptually pick up where certain tracks on Aijuswanaseing left off without missing a Jeep-rocking beat. "...pleasant and slyly seductive...a sequel designed for fans of earnest old-school soul..." The Philadelphhia Inquirer

Avoiding the trite practice of loading up on celebrity cameos, Musiq instead handles much of the heavy lifting himself with songwriting partner Carvin Haggins. Continuity is at the heart of JUSLISEN, as many of the songs are sequels to numbers appearing on his debut AIJUSWANASEING. | | Slow jam "Time" takes an abstract approach towards romance, not unlike the previoius album's "Love." The Stevie Wonder-flavored "Newness" follows up on the pursuit of "Girl Next Door," and the hip-hop-laced "Caughtup" follows through on "Seventeen." Even Musiq's breakthrough smash "Just Friends (Sunny)" finds its thread wending through the midtempo thump of "Stoplayin." Best of all is "Religious," which starts out with the ambiance of a church revival service before diving straight into funk mode via a sample of the groove-packed Meters nugget "Thinking." Equally worthy is a sweetly delivered cover of the late George Harrison's ballad "Something" that's given a twist with some subtle vamping. | Musical Guests | | Carol Riddick | | Vikter Duplaix | | Aaries |
| | Artist Overview | | The turn of the century was awash with young R&B performers purveying roots-conscious "neo-soul" that owed more to Marvin Gaye than to R. Kelly. Following close behind the likes of Maxwell, Macy Gray, and D'Angelo was the talented Taalib Johnson, better known as Musiq Soulchild. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Musiq soaked up that town's Philly International-centered R&B sound, and updated it for a new generation of soul fans. His 2000 debut was in fact produced by none other than kindred soul spirit D'Angelo, and featured a like-minded mix of new and old R&B grooves (and no small amount of Stevie Wonder influence). For the follow-up album, he dropped the surname and became simply Musiq, but his music suffered no such diminution |
