 Editor's Note
Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise), a slick, high-living sports agent, is tired of the shallowness of his profession and wants to live a more fulfilling, ethical life. But Jerry's new outlook doesn't mesh with his agency's ethics, and he is promptly fired. Jerry finds himself left with one ally, one client, and a long road ahead of him. Along the way he finds something more important than money--love. Cruise, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Renée Zellweger turn in outstanding performances in this romantic comedy written and directed by Cameron Crowe (SAY ANYTHING, SINGLES).
 Plot Summary
What happens when a man tries to apply moral standards to his job in an industry of greed? He gets fired. Tom Cruise plays Jerry Maguire, a slick sports agent who realizes that he hates how he is living his life and encourages his fellow employees to get back to the important basics: people, loyalty, and fairness. Unfortunately, Maguire's new moral compass costs him his job, and he is left to start his business anew with one work ally, agency accountant Dorothy Boyd (Renée Zellweger), and his least important client, Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.). Maguire embarks on a journey of personal growth that forces him to reevaluate his life choices and ultimately leads him to both friendship and love. Like his earlier films, SAY ANYTHING and SINGLES, this award-winning Cameron Crowe film features snappy dialogue, comic relief, and the occasional tear-jerking moment. Stellar performances are turned in from Cruise, Zellweger, and Gooding, Jr., as well as supporting cast members Bonnie Hunt, Jay Mohr, Regina King, and Kelly Preston.

| | Professional Reviews | Entertainment Weekly "...Cruise gives his deftest performance yet....Gooding turns in a ferocious, star-making turn..." -- Rating: A- 12/20/1996 p.58Variety "An exceptionally tasty contempo comedic romance....Smartly written and boasting a sensational cast, Cameron Crowe's shrewdly observed third feature also gives Tom Cruise one of his very best roles..." 12/09/1996 Chicago Sun-Times "...A heartwarmer....The film is often a delight, especially when Cruise and Zellweger are together on the screen..." 12/13/1996 p.43 Total Film "...It can still clearly melt the hardest of hearts..." 11/01/2000 p.120 Total Film "A key twist on The Cruise Grin....[He] loses the lot, learns life lessons and wins it back again." 07/01/2006 p.136 San Francisco Chronicle 7 of 10 Tom Cruise plays jerks like no other big-name star. It's hardly surprising that he breathes fire into his latest role as a high-rolling sports agent in the wonderfully entertaining Jerry Maguire... - Peter Stack Time Magazine 8 of 10 [The filmmakers] make no attempt to either glamorize or deglamorize athletes and their hangers-on [in Jerry Maguire]. There is a recognizable ordinariness about the way these people stumble in and out of trouble, in and out of grace--an ambiguous note, at once tart and sweet, knowing and innocent, in their relationships. This is completely unexpected in a big, star-driven...release. And altogether wondrous. - Richard Schickle
