| | | Features: DVD Starring in some of the most beloved and highly acclaimed films of all time, James Stewart carved himself a career path like no other. The James Stewart Box Set features Jimmy in some of his lesser known works: THE MAN FROM LARAMIE, BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE, and ANATOMY OF A MURDER.THE MAN FROM LARAMIE: Under Anthony Mann's superb direction, James Stewart departs from his well-loved 'ordinary hero" role and gives a riveting performance as a resolute vigilante obsessed with finding the man responsible for his brother's death. Among the suspects are an arrogant cattle baron (Donald Crisp), his sadistic son (Alex Nicol) and his ranch foreman (Arthur Kennedy, in the best performance of his career). One explosive confrontation, in which Stewart is dragged by a wild horse and shot in the hand at close range, is one of movie history's most memorable sequences. Among the first Western's filmed in CinemaScope, THE MAN FROM LARAMIE uses the wide-screen technology to emphasize the scope and power of this harrowing action-drama, making it a perfect example of the Western as America's epic art form. BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE: Meet Gillian Holroyd (Kim Novak), Greenwich Village's most seductive sorceress. Powerful, glamrous, and a wee bit bored, Gillian knows that witches can't fall in love. But they can have fun...especially if their lover belongs to another woman! So when Gillian discovers handsome new neighbor Shep Henderson (James Stewart) is the fiance of an old college nemesis (Janice Rule), she promptly puts the befuddled publisher under her spell. But while her sex may have heated up Shep's heart, it has also unthawed her own, leading to a romantic compilation that not even Pyewacket -- Gillian's mind-reading cat -- could have foreseen. ANATOMY OF A MURDER: A riveting courtroom drama of rape and premeditated murder is brought to life with an all-star cast in the suspenseful and highly-acclaimed ANATOMY OF A MURDER. Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture (1959), the film pits a humble small-town lawyer (James Stewart) against a hard-headed big-city prosecutor (George C. Scott). Emotions flare as a jealous army lieutenant (Ben Gazzara) pleads innocent to murdering the rapist of his seductive, beautiful wife (Lee Remick). Produced and directed by the renowned Otto Preminger, the film features a brilliant score by Duke Ellington. Packed with drama, passion and intrigue, ANATOMY OF A MURDER is a cinematic masterpiece that will keep you on the edge of your seat! "[Anatomy] One of the most extraordinary films ever made." Los Angeles Times "[Anatomy] Packed with astonishing dialog and bristly performances, this is essential cinema." Rich Cline, Shadows on the Wall "[Bell] Yep, I'm going to say it: Bewitching!" Staci Layne Wilson, StaciWilson.com "[Man] Not to be missed." The Motion Picture Guide "[Bell] A whimsical comedy with hilarity and romance in equal portions." Variety "[Man] Tough, surprisingly brutal western, the best of the classic Stewart-Mann films." VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever

| | Professional Reviews | Variety 8 of 10 [Man] Basically, the plot concerns the search by James Stewart, army captain on home from leave, for the man guilty of selling repeating rifles to an Apache tribe. The rifles had been used to wipe out a small cavalry patrol to which Stewart's younger brother had been attached so there is a motive of personal vengeance...Violence gets into the act early and repeats with regularity as Stewart's trail crosses with a number of warped sadistic characters...Stewart goes about his characterization with an easy assurance. Arthur Kennedy, Donald Crisp and Alex Nicol are firstrate in their delineations of the twisted people on the ranch. Distaff characters are done by Cathy O'Donnell, good as the girl who wants to escape the influence of the ranch, and Aline MacMahon, who gives a socko portrayal of a tough old rancher. Reel.com 8 of 10 [Bell] Kim Novak bewitched James Stewart in Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, so perhaps it was only natural that she play the sorceress who weaves a seductive spell on Stewart in the romantic comedy Bell, Book and Candle...Gillian (Novak) is a beautiful, bored witch who decides to amuse herself by practicing magic on her handsome new neighbor, Shep (Stewart) when she discovers that he's engaged to marry her nasty college rival, Merle (Janice Rule)...Bell, Book and Candle may be airier than helium, but it never fails to delight. Novak and Stewart are incandescent as the lovers, and receive the fine comic support of Jack Lemmon as Gillian's bongo-playing brother, Ernie Kovacs as a witch-hunting writer, Elsa Lanchester as Gillian's daffy aunt Queenie, and Hermione Gingold as Bianca De Pass, doyenne of New York's witches. Equally charming is the film's view of 1958 Manhattan as an urban wonderland with magic of its own to offer young lovers. - Pam Grady
