J.B. himself would be proud. | | In a painful attempt to bring James Brown to a younger, hipper audience in Japan, someone at Universal thought it a good idea to have a small group of electronic artists remix and revamp the James Brown catalog. Unfortunately, this idea isn't as original as it seems on paper, as a large majority of hip-hop was built upon sampling and deconstructing the Godfather of Soul's mighty catalog. Just as unfortunate is the fact that most of these remixes (a) do not hold water to any of the potent originals and (b) aren't exactly the most original reconstructions. Die-hard fans will view this as blasphemy and even the most unseasoned of casual listeners will laugh at the lack of creativity employed here, so it's just best to steer clear of this overall. ~ Rob Theakston |
