The defeat of the titular arch-villain in the Bond series' inaugural Dr. No provides the fly in From Russia with Love's revenge-motivated ointment. Seeking to mete out payback on James Bond (Sean Connery) for eliminating their best and most evil megalomaniac, the global terrorist organization SPECTRE attempts to lure in the super-spy by using a Russian decoding machine as its dangling carrot....read the full review |

| | Professional Reviews | Variety 10 of 10 [For] For Your Eyes Only bears not the slightest resemblance to the Ian Fleming novel of the same title, but emerges as one of the most thoroughly enjoyable of the 12 Bond pix [to date] despite fact that many of the usual ingredients in the successful 007 formula are missing...The film is probably the best-directed on all levels since On Her Majesty's Secret Service, as John Glen, moving into the director's chair after long service as second unit director and editor, displays a fine eye...Story also benefits from presence of a truly sympathetic heroine, fetchingly portrayed by Carole Bouquet... ReelViews 9 of 10 [From] The elements of From Russia with Love move the movie closer to the recognizable "Bond formula" than was the case for its predecessor, Dr. No. Here, the action scenes are more numerous and generate added tension, the title sequence has a familiar flavor, John Barry's distinctive score replaces the workmanlike music of Monty Norman, Q makes his first appearance, and Connery tones up 007's sophistication while downplaying his cold-bloodedness...From Russia with Love is among the most tightly-plotted of all the Bond films, and, as a result, is one of the shortest. It moves briskly, blending intrigue, romance, and action into an immensely satisfying whole. - James Berardinelli Goatdog's Movies 9 of 10 [On] The consensus among James Bond fans is that George Lazenby was the "fake" Bond, the guy who did only one film and then faded into obscurity. They discount On Her Majesty's Secret Service because they don't like the awkward Australian model, who had the look but not the feel of Bond. However, they forget that this is one of the finest of the Bond films: it has one of the best screenplays, the action sequences are first-rate, the return of Blofeld (played here by Telly Savalas) is welcome, and, most importantly, this entry has an emotional core that is missing from most of the other films. Bond falls in love, and his eventual loss is heartbreaking. - Michael W. Phillips, Jr. Chicago Sun-Times 7 of 10 [Live] "Live and Let Die" is the ninth James Bond picture, and not exactly the best. It has all the necessary girls, gimmicks, subterranean control rooms, uniformed goons and magic wristwatches it can hold, but it doesn't have the wit and it doesn't have the style of the best Bond movies...There are a few elements every Bond movie absolutely must have, and "Live and Let Die" has them. It opens, of course, with a meeting with M and the faithful Miss Moneypenny. It has Bond arriving at the Caribbean hideout by man-bearing kite. It has a spectacular chase (this one involves speedboats, but isn't as much fun as the great ski chase two Bonds ago). - Roger Ebert Variety 9 of 10 [GoldenEye] James Bond is definitely back in business with "Goldeneye." Among the better of the 17 Bonds and, perhaps more important for today's audience, a dynamic action entry in its own right, this first 007 adventure in six years breathes fresh creative and commercial life into the 33-year-old series. Pierce Brosnan makes a solid debut in the role he almost got eight years earlier, and Ian Fleming's very midcentury secret agent has been shrewdly repositioned in the '90s in ways that will amuse longtime fans and prove engaging for viewers not even born when Bond started saving the world. - Todd McCarthy
