| | Professional Reviews | ReelViews 8 of 10 [Dr.] Barring a television adaptation of Casino Royale in the 1950s (not to be confused with the 1967 movie of the same name), 1962's Dr. No was the first opportunity fans of Ian Fleming's James Bond had to watch the intrepid superspy in action. However, producers Harry Saltzman and Albert Broccoli wanted their movie to appeal to a wider audience than just Fleming's readers. To that end, they altered the 007 of the novels to better fit the screen. Bond became more suave and witty, and less cold- blooded. Nevertheless, the hero of Dr. No is still grittier than he would become by Goldfinger (released only two years later), and bears little resemblance to the version of Bond essayed by Roger Moore beginning in 1973. - James Berardinelli DVD Verdict 8 of 10 [Moonraker] The eleventh installment in the James Bond saga, Moonraker took advantage of the resurgent interest in sci-fi/fantasy thanks to Star Wars and made a bundle by taking 007 and his world-threatening nemesis into outer space. Though not one of the best Bond films, Moonraker remains pleasing movie fare and is presented in fine special edition fashion...Finally, this plot of "Bond in Space" was a clear attempt to capitalize on the surging popularity of Star Wars, and while it does a reasonable job avoiding bad effects to detract from its ambitions, it does take Bond a bit too far into the realm of gadgets and technology. This flaw was implicitly admitted when the next film, For Your Eyes Only, returned to a much more firmly grounded, spycraft-oriented story. - Nicholas Sylvain Chicago Sun-Times 7 of 10 [You] A great deal of money was spent on the fifth Bond epic in an attempt to duplicate this mystique, but in "You Only Live Twice" the formula fails to work its magic. Like its predecessor "Thunderball," another below-par entry, this one is top-heavy with gadgets but weak on plotting and getting everything to work at the same time...Connery labors mightily. There is still the same Bond grin, still the cool humor under fire, still the slight element of satire. But when he puts on his cute little helmet and is strapped into his helicopter, somehow the whole illusion falls apart and what we're left with is a million-dollar playpen in which everything works but nothing does anything. - Roger Ebert San Francisco Chronicle 8 of 10 [Tomorrow] James Bond is the movie franchise, out-sequeling Batman and Superman and every other mythic man. Bond makes his 18th appearance in "Tomorrow Never Dies,'' and if the formula seems a little tired, it still has more sophistication and pizzazz than most action films...The stunts are not only spectacularly done but also witty, including one that begins as a free-fall from an airplane and ends as a deep-sea dive. Before he brings it off, Brosnan is peppered with instructions on how to do it, which, of course, he absorbs so offhandedly it appears intuitive. - Ruthe Stein Qwipster's Movie Reviews 7 of 10 [Octopussy] Although it ultimately delivers all of the humor, romance and action you'd expect from a James Bond flick, Octopussy is definitely one of the weaker entries in the series, and outside of its provocative name, fairly unremarkable. Although any 007 film necessitates lots of short-cuts and contrivances to work, very rarely has there been so much use of cliches and stereotypes permeating almost every scene...Octopussy is mainly for fans of the series, and especially for those who like Roger Moore. For those who haven't seen any Bond films, or maybe just a couple, it's probably best not to watch this until you've seen some of the better Bond films first, namely, the ones featuring Connery and Brosnan. - Vince Leo
