Some people just love a challenge. Grammy-winning reggae/pop superstar Shaggy is one of those people. Like the time he hit #1 around the world with his first major label single ("Oh Carolina"), or the time he walked unnoticed through a crowded arena before a concert, then required an escort on the way out because of the mob of newly-won fans. Shaggy's favorite challenge, however, is one he poses to himself every time he enters the studio and draws on his limitless hit-making talent. In its thirteen tracks, Hotshot proves Shaggy remains a master of many styles - from reggae and dancehall to pop/R&B - making it a happy hunting ground for every kind of music fan.

"This album is a roller coaster ride," says Shaggy of Hotshot, which instantly qualifies as one of the most upbeat and sexy party records of the year. "I wanted to show many different sides of my musical personality." To pull that off, Shaggy enlisted the help of co-producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Robert Livingston, Shaun "Sting" Pizzonia, Dave Kelly, Tony Kelly and Gordon Duke. Recorded at Shaggy's New York studios and in Jamaica as well, the album was entirely written or co-written by Shaggy himself, and of course features his distinctive, utterly unique vocals throughout.

GRAMMY winning reggae superstar Shaggy delivers another hit-stacked album with HOTSHOT. The album incorporates a mix of styles and songwriting textures, from the singer's customary super party vibe to the more mellow qualities of songs such as "Why Me Lord," "Keepin' it Real," and "Hope," the latter of which was featured in the Kevin Costner movie FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME.
For those fans who need some Shaggy to get down with in the clubs, HOTSHOT has such potential dance floor smashes as "Dance & Shout," which lifts the chorus from the classic Jackson 5 hit "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)." Another highlight is "Angel," based on Chip Taylor's classic '60s song "Angel of the Morning," where Shaggy inventively incorporates a funky guitar sample from Steve Miller's "The Joker." HOTSHOT also includes an updated version of the Shaggy classic "Luv Me, Luv Me."

Artist Overview
Pop crossover dancehall artist Shaggy (born Orville Richard Burrell in Jamaica) scored a huge hit with 1993's "Oh Carolina," a cover of the 1960s recording by the Folkes Brothers. After becoming a pop sensation in Britain, Shaggy hit the top of the U.S. charts with 1995's "Boombastic." His danceable combination of dancehall reggae and pop (minus the sexually explicit lyrics common to much dancehall music) made him mainstream material.

Professional Reviews
Q (10/00, pp.127-8)
- 3 stars out of 5 - "...Like a Shabba Ranks who does kids' parties. [This album] is his usual mix of reggae, R&B and pop, with backing singers and melodies over which he toasts and raps at speed..."

CMJ (8/14/00, p.33)
- "...Another well-calculated, commercially viable reggae record....Shaggy keeps the party rolling."

The Source (10/00, p.265)
- "...A lexicon of '60s and '70s hits reconfigured for a contemporary palette....this disc continues down the mainstream path that his style of dancehall warrants."
